Folly Field near Upper Dicconson Street was Wigan Rugby Union club's first ground. The club played their first match at the ground in 30th November 1872 and remained at the ground for 5 seasons. In 1877 the club merged with Up Holland Football Club to form Wigan and District Football Club and moved to Frog Lane.

Following the demise of Wigan and District Football Club, the newly formed Wigan Wasps Football Club returned to Folly Field in 1879. Their first practice match was played on October 11th 1879 and their first competitive match was against St. Lawerences, Chorley on Saturday November 8th. The club stayed at the ground until 1886 when they moved to Prescott Street.
