Surely the other thing the figures point to is that the changes to the rules themselves have encouraged attacking play once sides get on a roll, and made it harder for defenders. So, as you say, the sides with better attacks, like Saints, have made hay.

Because some criticisms may seem unfair or invalid, doesn't mean that all are.

I'm not sure I would swap him either, but what does seem clear is that Clark is playing in a side that is starting to hit its straps and look like a effective team outfit in attack and defence. Sam Powell does not have that luxury right now.

To be fair, most of the successful NRL sides manage without this mythical ball-playing 13 that everyone seems to think is so essential to rugby league (not saying it's a bad thing, though, of course).
