Sharks set to face St Helens in cross-code clash

St Helens coach Ian Millward has revealed that his Super League club are in negotiations to play Zurich Premiership side Sale Sharks in January.

"There is a great rivalry between union and league and Sale won the Parker Pen Shield last year and have some great players in former St Helens star Appolo Perelini, Charlie Hodgson, Bryan Redpath and Jason Robinson," Millward told www.sportinglife.com.

"I can let you know there will be a game between the two sides - a very serious one - which will consist of 40 minutes of rugby league and 40 minutes of rugby union.

"Whichever team wins the toss on the night will decide which is played first. We are just in the process of discussing everything and as it stands it will be played at Knowsley Road with a trophy up for grabs.

"Both sets of players are aware of the proposal and are keen to play, as are the coaches and the chairmen.

"It will be very, very serious and we are looking forward to pitting our wits against a union team. There will be a lot at stake for both clubs."
