Bill Ashurst at Riversiders Tonight

Post by josie andrews »

Former Wigan player Bill Ashurst and guests Andy Gregory, Alex Murphy, Jim Mills and Mike Nicholas will be at the Riversiders meeting tonight.

The event will be held at the DW Stadium with doors at 7pm for a 7:30pm start.

Ashurst, widely recognised as one of the outstanding second-row forwards in rugby league since the Second World War is launching his hard hitting autobiography which covers his full rugby league career and much more.

Bill Ashurst: Tries and Prayers - A Rugby League Journey, looks at Bill's playing and coaching year whilst charting his life growing up in Wigan up to becoming a Christian.

Bill's career was often controversial. His book pulls no punches as he looks back on a bitter defeat in the 1970 Challenge Cup Final; a record unbeaten run with Wigan; playing for Penrith and his relationship with Mike Stephenson; falling out with Vince Karalius and leaving Wigan for a second time; being assistant coach at Wigan with Alex Murphy; coaching at Wakefield Trinity and being sent off in his final playing appearance for Runcorn Highfield at Central Park.

The book will be available at the event for £14.00, or can be ordered from the London League Publications Ltd website, www.llpshop.co.uk for £14.00 post free in the UK. It will also be available from Warriors World.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

He wasn't known as King Bill for nothing - the best Wigan born player I've ever seen. He could do everything and just a pity he couldn't have played in a more successful era. Imagine him packing down with Andy Farrell,Dennis Betts,Hanley etc. Would have been awesome.
Good luck with tonight Bill. Thanks for the memories.

Yes there is a lot of luck in life in that regard. We were just entering a dark age as Ashurst emerged, one of lifes mysteries. Now our best players cannot compete with Australia and union and soccer who have much much more money .It was much better in the old days in that respect.Yet as a spectacle our game is better than ever.

Our best players can't compete with the Australians ?

Sam Burgess first ever English MOM in an Aussie Grand Final (albeit now off to Bath), George Burgess regular prop for GF Winners Souths, knocking the spots of Aussie players, as are his brothers Tom & Luke. James Graham the Bulldogs player of the year, Gareth Widdop the regular half back partner to Cooper Cronk at Melbourne Storm for a number of years and now one of St George's main players, as is ex Wolves prop/2nd row Mike Cooper. Our Sam isn't exactly a shrinking violet, either. Then there's other English players approached to play there but turned them down, like Ratchford and Ryan Hall. Also our very own Academy Prop Ryan Sutton is wanted by the Roosters, as is Joe Burgess (please stay Joe !).

And certainly the likes of SOL, MM, Josh would also be a success down there.

Don't think this particular argument carries much weight ?
