Wigan boss looking to use Tomkins experience

Post by josie andrews »

Wigan boss Shaun Wane believes Sam Tomkins' experience can help him mentor some of the younger players at the club. -

The full-back has re-joined the Cherry and Whites after two years playing in the NRL for New Zealand Warriors but will not be available until Easter due to a knee injury.

It means he will miss the opening few weeks of the season but Wane is likely to try and use the 26-year-old's experience to try and positively influence some of the club's youngsters. In Tomkins' absence, Lewis Tierney is likely to take over at full-back and will surely relish the opportunity to learn from one of the best in the game.

Wane admits he has been impressed by the England international since his return to the UK and has backed him to help his younger colleagues flourish.

"He's a player that understands our culture, understands me, understands the way we play and brings a lot to the club," Wane told the club's official website.

"He's a great professional who is very competitive, he trains really well and understands the game.

He'll be great for our younger players. "It seems weird saying that about Sam now because I remember him as a 13-year-old kid but he's a great role model for the likes of Lewis Tierney now and our younger players will learn a lot from working with someone like Sam everyday."

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
