Wigan Warriors departing Head Coach is to bestowed with a civic honour thanks to his incredible service to the club.
Shaun is to be honoured with a star on Believe Square in the town centre – an honour for people who have given outstanding service to Wigan in their chosen field.
The crowning glory on Shaun’s Wigan career came on Saturday when in his last game coaching the Warriors they won the Super League Grand Final by beating Warrington at Old Trafford.
Shaun, who was born and brought up in Wigan, started his Wigan career in 1982 and played 149 times for the club. He has since had various roles in the club going on to being a highly successful head coach winning every honour possible.
Councillor David Molyneux, leader of Wigan Council, said: “Shaun Wane has given three decades of dedicated service to Wigan and the game of rugby league.
“Through his success he has helped put the national and international spotlight on the borough and has developed many local players into world class performers. “It was only right that as a council we recognise what Shaun has achieved. “While his career goes in a new direction we wanted to have permanent recognition here of what he has achieved for Wigan.”
Shaun joins illustrious Wiganers on Believe Square including Hollywood actor Sir Ian McKellen, Olympic athlete Jenny Meadows and BBC broadcaster Stuart Maconie. The date for when Shaun will receive his star has not yet been confirmed.

Shaun Wane to be awarded Wigan Star
Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Excellent. Mr Wigan.
Footballers spend 90 minutes pretending they're injured. Rugby League players spend 80 minutes pretending they're not.
