Lam wants 'flamboyant' rugby at Wigan

Post by josie andrews »

Wigan Warriors head coach Adrian Lam has vowed to bring 'flamboyant' rugby league to the club.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

It doesn't have to be flamboyant to improve. Last season the number of times we got into the last 20m and looked clueless as to how to break down a defence was frustrating and chucking the ball about willy nilly trying to be flamboyant is not the answer. It's the guile and skill of unlocking the defence we need.

Run into the gaps and run at angles..... halves should be putting players through gaps..... not our style at the moment but im sure its what lammy has planned ....... will be interesting

Correct.

That said he has nothing to lose. I can see us throwing the ball about a lot more under him.

Flamboyant teams tend not to win trophies!! Great teams are built on defence and then earning the right to play positively but smart!

Flamboyant - tending to attract attention because of exuberance, confidence and stylishness (Oxford English Dictionary) That’ll do for me!!
A word of encouragement during a failure is worth more than an hour of praise after success.

Back in the day we had the financial power to employ the very best. Today we have what we can afford once the Aussies have taken the best players. The result is that flamboyant players are often weaker in certain areas. Given the scientific and technical improvements around the game we also have fewer donkeys than of old. The outcome is less space and less time. Hopefully fewer interchanges will mean more space for the flamboyant players as fatigue sets in. Interestingly I could see that being good for Wigan with our history of smaller forwards.

So our game back then still wasn’t based on a fantastic defence and bullying teams into sunmission till our ability took over?
