Oliver Partington on what it’s like to play for his home town Club after making debut last year.

Prop hoping to get more game time in 2019 under new Head Coach Adrian Lam.

Partington: “My targets are to keep pushing for a spot in the 17 every week and if I keep working hard with my head down, I’m sure I’ll get my chance.”
Wigan’s Oliver Partington says it is a ‘dream’ to play for his home town Club, as the youngster is set for his second season in the First Team.
Partington, 20, progressed through the Wigan Academy system after signing from local amateur club Orrell St James ARLFC.

He said: “Playing for my home town club is a dream come true. It’s all I’ve ever wanted from being a kid. My family are big Wigan fans too, so it meant a lot for them to see me play.”

The prop became an Under-19s Grand Final Winner in 2017, whilst also representing England at Youth level. After an impressive season, he was rewarded with a professional contract ahead of the 2018 campaign.

Renowned for his powerful play and ferocious tackles, Partington burst on to the scene in 2018 and helped Wigan to Super League success, after making five First Team appearances following his debut in the 24-22 win against Castleford at the DW Stadium in August.

He admitted: “It was a great feeling after working hard all year. To finally get that opportunity was unreal for me and my family. It was good to get my game time in the Super 8s, as they were big games and must win.”

After working under the leadership of Shaun Wane last year, Partington has relished the opportunity to impress under new Head Coach Adrian Lam in pre-season, after he revealed his excitement of the new season.

The forward has switched from the No.35 jersey to No.26 and hopes he can become a regular in 2019.

“Pre-season is going well. We’ve done most of the tough stuff and are now getting into the game-related preparation, focusing on the pre-season fixtures and the start of the season.

“It’s good working with Lammy (Adrian Lam) he is a good coach and knows his stuff. You can tell he has been where we are and done it.

“My targets are to keep pushing for a spot in the 17 every week and if I keep working hard with my head down, I’m sure I’ll get my chance.”
