A focus on Jarrod Sammut’s 11 year career before he signed for Wigan Warriors.
Maltese international is relishing the chance to play in the Super League after a four year absence.
Sammut: “Every club runs differently, but one of the biggest eye openers at Wigan so far is the level of competitiveness between the group.”
Wigan’s Jarrod Sammut believes the Club can get the best out of him as the half-back prepares to play in the Super League again.
The 31-year-old last featured in a top-flight game in 2015 when he was with Wakefield Trinity following his contracts with Crusaders RL and Bradford Bulls.
After his release from London Broncos, Sammut joined the Warriors on a two-year deal in December and the half-back is already loving life in the North West.
He said: “The Club is super professional, and it makes the transition from London to Wigan that much easier. Everyone has been very welcoming and push to get the best out of you. The culture and the environment is something you want to be a part of and I’m really enjoying it.”
Sammut’s 11-year career in the game will not go unnoticed by the Wigan squad, as he set to provide healthy competition in the halves. His versatility allows him to cover at full-back and hooker as well as being a reliable goal kicker.
Having represented both the Maltese Rugby League team and the Maltese Rugby Union team, Sammut is a duel-code international for Malta. He started his rugby league career at Penrith Panthers in the NRL and made 38 appearances from 2007 to 2009.
Sammut signed for Crusaders in 2010 and scored a try on his Super League debut in the 0-19 win against Bradford at the Magic Weekend at Murrayfield, Edinburgh. He then joined Bradford in 2012 and went on to score 32 tries and convert 60 goals in 40 games for the Yorkshire Club.
In 2014, he went to Wakefield on a two-year deal whilst having duel-registration spells at Featherstone Rovers and Workington Town and a loan move to London. Sammut joined Workington on a permanent deal in 2016 and went on to play 25 games, scoring 24 tries and converting 57 goals.
A year later, he signed for London where he mounted 566 points in 55 times games after scoring 45 tries and converting 191 goals. The most important goals he did add where the two in the 4-2 Million Pound Game win over Toronto Wolfpack in 2018, as he sealed London’s return to Super League.
Sammut admitted: “Obviously, I’ve been out of the top flight for a few years, but it’s always something I felt I still had plenty to offer for. Gaining promotion with London last season was a huge moment in my career and as a club we achieved something quite remarkable.
“Confidence and emotions from that are still riding high and I’m really looking forward to playing at the top again. I would like to think I bring an out-the-box thought process while being a senior player. I always look to catch and challenge the opposition in ways they least expect it.
“Every club runs differently, but one of the biggest eye openers at Wigan so far is the level of competitiveness between the group. Everyone pushes to be winners in everything we do, which is great as it lifts everyone’s tenfold and drives the standards we set.”
The half-back also commented on new Head Coach Adrian Lam and the impact he has had on the squad in pre-season.
“Lammy (Lam) has been great. We’ve had to take a lot of information onboard in a short space of time, but everyone has picked it up quite fast. He loves a laugh with the lads, but he lets it be known when it’s time to crack on and get the job done.
“Pre-season is only as hard as you make it, but it is gruelling and non-stop punishment on the body. But it’s a great time for the team to grow as a group and as individuals so we push our boundaries even further.
“As a team we’re looking to go back to back. We are under no illusions of the challenge ahead, but we are hitting our markers and ticking the boxes off day by day and these will put us in good stead to achieve our goal.
“There is plenty of hard work still to do but it’s an exciting time for us all and we’re confident we can achieve it.”
