Wigan Warriors U19s XIII run in six tries against West Wales Raiders in friendly clash in Llanelli

Wing Joe Brown crossed for a brace of tries, as Warriors defence shuts out the Raiders

Head of Youth Mick Cassidy pleased with his side’s performance

A Wigan Warriors U19s select XIII defeated Betfred League 1 side West Wales Raiders 34-0 at Stebonheath Park on Saturday.

Two tries from wing Joe Brown, plus efforts from Cian Tyrer, Ben Kilner, Corey Hall and Jack Bateman saw Mick Cassidy’s side run out comfortable winners against a much-improved Raiders outfit.

Cian Tyrer opened the scoring for the Warriors after eight minutes of play, the Wigan winger racing on to a Ryan Forshaw grubber to finish in the corner.

Wigan withstood a Raiders barrage as the hosts looked to respond. Firstly, Raiders’ second row Mike Connor was held-up over the line before his pack partner Dan Maiden went close to scoring only for a tricky bouncing ball to evade him.

After absorbing the Raiders pressure Wigan extended their lead, when wing Joe Brown intercepted and raced in from 30 metres to score. Stand-off Callum Green converted to give the Warriors a 10-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

The Warriors were now dominating the contest, and after forwards Ethan Havard and Morgan Smithies went close to scoring, Joe Brown added his second try of the afternoon with two minutes remaining of the first half. Again, Green added the extras as the Warriors led 16-0 at the break.

After the break, the Warriors crossed for two quick-fire scores as prop forward Ben Kilner powered over from close range for Wigan’s fourth try of the afternoon before Corey Hall scored after collecting another pin-point kick from the impressive Ryan Forshaw. Green once again added the extras.

Replacement wing Jack Kennedy rounded off an impressive Wigan performance with length-of-the-field try three minutes before the final hooter. Joe Shorrocks landed the conversion.

Wigan Warriors Head of Youth, Mick Cassidy: “I was happy with the hit-out and our players will benefit from having minutes out on the park as they prepare for the (upcoming) season. There’s plenty for us to work on, but a fixture against a much-improved and well-drilled West Wales Raiders side helps us see where we are as a squad and a few of our players put their hands up today.”

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
