Adrian Lam's main instruction to his Wigan Warriors players ahead of Leeds Rhinos showdown

Post by josie andrews »

Adrian Lam has challenged his Wigan players to snap out of their old habits as they prepare to face Leeds on Friday.

The Warriors coach said he was “confused” after their 22-12 loss at St Helens on Super League’s opening night.

And having analysed the match and reviewed it with his squad, he remains convinced they fell away from their game-plan when they are were under the blowtorch. “When they were fatigued they reverted to what they knew, and the players agreed – we didn’t play as we trained all pre-season,” said Lam.

“I don’t want to disrespect what was done in the past, but we want to add a different style of play. And when you’ve done something a particular way for so long it’s easy to revert to that when you’re under the pump. “So we’ve got to be a bit smarter and play to the structure we have been training. “And we’ve got to work that bit harder on our shape.

Hopefully you see a different type of performance on Friday night.” Leeds, coached by Lam’s former Wigan team-mate Dave Furner, are also seeking their first win after going down 26-6 at Warrington – although the Warriors are two points behind on the table following their punishment for breaking the salary cap in 2017.

Lam has no fresh suspension issues – Jarrod Sammut is still unavailable as he serves a ban – and he hopes prop Tony Clubb is fit to play after he left the action at the Totally Wicked Stadium with a head knock and didn’t return. “He’s got another test to pass, but he looks like he’ll be okay,” added Lam, who will name his 19-man squad tomorrow.

Winger Dom Manfredi is not fit to return after a clean-out operation on his knee.

He could be in contention to face the Sydney Roosters the following week in the World Club Challenge – if Lam opts for him ahead of Liam Marshall or Tom Davies.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

But that’s the thing though isn’t it,these lads have the Wane way ingrained into them for so long it’s going to take a good while for any real changes to take effect and it’ll be interesting if any changes become permanent.

When an era comes to a close at a sports club it’s usually a thankless task for the lad following to try and stamp their mark on things,Man Utd and Liverpool are two prime examples of this in football.

Yet the new manager at utd has had an immediate effect, fozzie.

Let's hope Lam gets the message through just as effectively ?

And it's perhaps a lot more technical (and physical) to change things around at rugby compared to football ?

Nonsense since Fergie left they’ve gone through a plethora of managers..it’s taken them what is three or four bosses to get things on the right track again,as for Liverpool well you get my point.

I just think this season could be a bit of a struggle perhaps more than he and we fans realise, yes they’re pros and very good ones at that but it will take much more time than Lams has so far

Think Nezza is referring to Ole and the immediate effect he has had on Utd. Pretty similar to what Michael Maguire did when he first came to Wigan.

IMO, saints have slightly strengthen a couple of weak areas in their squad and we have slightly weakened a couple of areas in our squad.

Exactly Jobo.
Mourinho became "personna non grata" owing to the continual run of bad results and "will he", "won't he" be sacked was the question everywhere in the media. Yet immediately Ole, the new manager, has completely transformed that team, with exactly the same players, to now be at the top of their game and challenging for honours.

I still think it's more difficult to transform a side in rugby, virtually overnight, as there's so much technical stuff in both Attack and Defence, with various calls, game plans, and the versatility of different playing positions.

I'd say it'll take 4-6 weeks for Lam's influence to properly come through ? Leeds now is a big match !
