Farrell: We need to respond

Liam Farrell says Wigan have to improve from last week’s defeat to St Helens.
Forward looks ahead to round two fixture with Leeds Rhinos at the DW Stadium on Friday night.
Farrell: “This week we’ve looked really good and trained against the rest of the squad and things have clicked better.”
Liam Farrell says Wigan Warriors will be a ‘different side’ against Leeds Rhinos on Friday night, but states his side are wary of the visitors’ hunger to respond as both teams lost their opening games in the BETFRED Super League.
The Cherry and Whites went down to a 22-12 defeat at St Helens last Thursday, while the Rhinos were rumbled 26-6 by Warrington Wolves.
And Farrell is expecting a fierce clash at the DW Stadium, but claims Wigan are under pressure to deliver.
He said: “This is just a bigger game as the St Helens derby for me. We will come out with a better mindset and you will see a very different side from us this week, but you could also see a completely different Leeds.
“They’re a quality team and they’ll be looking to bounce back. We’re probably under pressure a little bit with the points reduction we’ve had and the game coming up next week, so we know we need a result and big performance going into the World Club Challenge.
“They’ve had some new structures put in place. From their terms they had a disappointing result last week and they’re looking to bounce back like we are. We’re expecting a big improvement from them, but we’ve not focused on them a lot this week.”
The experienced second row revealed the frustration from inside the Warriors camp after last week’s loss to local rivals St Helens.
But Farrell is hoping Wigan can improve on Friday and put in place what the players have worked on in training.
“We didn’t execute things we put in place during that week. We were disappointed, so we’ve had to right a few wrongs this week.
“We’ve spent the last three months working on new things, and we look like a superstar team in training at times, but when you come under pressure from an opposition it’s a different game and unfortunately it didn’t work out last Thursday like we had planned it to.
“This week we’ve looked really good and trained against the rest of the squad and things have clicked better. It’s about us making sure we fix up a few things in our attack and defence, as we had a few defensive misses last week that were unusual for us.
“There might be a few tweaks in what we do attacking wise and we might throw the ball about a bit more because it’s something we lacked last week.”
Farrell also commented on Adrian Lam’s decision to put him on the right side of the forward line, with Joe Greenwood sustaining a place on the left side in the second row.
“I’m excited to be given the chance to play on the right, as it probably suits me a little bit more than on the left. It could be a really good partnership with Tommy (Leuluai) and Gilly (Oliver Gildart) outside me as well.
“It suits Joe a lot more to play on the left as he’s a left-hand carrier and he’s played there a lot for other teams. I’m never going to complain where I get put in a 13 team.”
