Gabe Hamlin previews Wigan’s Betfred Super League Round 3 game against Hull FC at the DW Stadium on Sunday.

Australian forward expects a ‘tough challenge’ from the Black and Whites.

Hamlin: “Eventually, they’re going to win a game, and we don’t want to be the team that lets them do that.”

Gabe Hamlin says Wigan Warriors will not take Hull FC ‘lightly’ despite Sunday’s opponents failing to win a Super League game since last June.

The Black and Whites had a poor end to 2018, and they have since lost their opening two games this campaign.

But Hamlin believes Wigan must remain focused throughout to avoid becoming the first team to stop Hull’s duck.

He said: “We have to treat them with respect. Eventually, they’re going to win a game, and we don’t want to be the team that lets them do that. If a team switches off against them they will get a sniff so we’re definitely not going to take them lightly.

They’ve got a lot of players that can create something out of nothing. They have a mix of skilful and big players; they’re a handful and I don’t know why they haven’t been winning games.

“All it takes is for them to flick a switch and they will be back to winning ways, so we have to make sure we’re not the team that gets them back on that winning role.

“It’s going to be a challenge, but all the boys are up for it.”

Hamlin featured in last week’s Befred World Club Challenge defeat to Sydney Roosters, and he admitted his team have taken a leaf out of the NRL side’s book in preparation for Sunday’s fixture.

The 22-year-old feels Wigan have improved since the Round 1 loss to St Helens and that it’s now time for them to put everything they have learned into the Hull game.

Hamlin said: “We’ve had a look at the whole game (World Club Challenge) and studied everything we did wrong and everything we did right. We probably learned a lot more from losing the game.

They (Sydney) play a completely different style of rugby. They have really good field position and in the NRL it’s about playing in the middle, whereas in Super League every club likes to ping the ball around.

“We’re going to learn from it and get the best from both styles of play to make a perfect game plan.”

The Australian forward added: “We learned a lot from it and we’ve been getting better since Round 1. We’ve taken a lot out of each game so far and we want to take it all into Hull.

“We’re going to fix up our defence this week and take a little bit out of what Sydney did against us. We need to perfect what we haven’t got right so far.”

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
