Adrian Lam previews Wigan’s Betfred Super League fixture with Huddersfield Giants on Friday.

Provides updates on Greenwood, Hamlin, Sarginson, Manfredi and Burgess

Wigan Warriors vs Huddersfield Giants - Friday 8th March, K.O. 7:45pm

Wigan Head Coach Adrian Lam believes his side will take to the field with a different mentality on Friday night as they face Huddersfield Giants at the DW Stadium (K.O. 7:45pm).

The Warriors will host a Huddersfield side who have lost all four of their Betfred Super League games this season. Adrian Lam’s side head into the game off the back off a narrow 18-16 defeat to London Broncos last Sunday.

Reflecting on last week’s defeat, Lam explained, “It was disappointing. It’s not good to lose at any time but to put back-to-back losses together is really disappointing for the club.”

“I would mention to the Wigan fans to keep faith and stay positive through this period because we know as a group we will come through it and hopefully that will be reflected in the performance this weekend.”

On his side’s preparations for Friday’s Betfred Super League game with Huddersfield Giants, the Head Coach highlighted a number of changes could be made with injured players returning.

“I think we are getting five players back this week so that’s a massive boost for the team and the Club. It’s hard to get cohesion and consistency when you’ve got a few of the boys out.

“When you look at that in comparison to the side they finished with last year as well as the new coaching styles they are trying to adapt to, it’s always going to take a bit of time.

“We’ve trained really well every week to be honest but the results haven’t really reflected that. We’ve crossed a bridge this week and I think you’ll see a different mentality on Friday night.”

The Opposition
Friday’s opponents will arrive at the DW without a win in 2019, however Lam believes that they are playing better than their results suggest.

“On video they’re playing well. They are probably an unfortunate team that could have had different results like us. We understand that they are also trying to get their performances up so that’s going to be a massive challenge for us.

Injury News
Last week Lam eluded to the possible return of winger Dom Manfredi, who picked up a knee injury in pre-season which has kept him from making an appearance so far in the 2019 campaign.

On Manfredi’s possible inclusion this week he said, “It’s pleasing and we also have Joe Burgess a couple of weeks away. When you look at those three in the side [including Zak Hardaker] you’ve got a lot of height and big bodies in kick returning.”

The winger won’t be the only player returning to the mix this week either as the Head Coach provided updates on those who were missing last week for the trip to London.

“We’ve got Ben Flower returning this week, Gabe Hamlin will be back and Liam Marshall.

“[Dan Sarginson] He’s a 50/50 and we are still waiting on Joe Greenwood after his concussion from last week.”

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
