Wigan Warriors Women’s fixtures for 2019 released
The defending Champions will kick off their campaign on April 7th
Warriors to face St Helens in season opener
The fixtures for Wigan Warriors Women’s 2019 Season have today been released, as the defending Champions gear up for their second year in the Women’s Super League.
This year sees Wakefield Trinity promoted into the Women’s Super League, making the 2019 campaign an eight team ladder, offering an extra two games in comparison to the 2018 season. In all three leagues the season will begin on April 7 and end on September 29.
The top four teams in Women’s Super League will then enter into semi-final play-offs, with first place playing fourth and second playing third, before the Women’s Super League Grand Final and Championship Grand Final both take place on Sunday, October 13 at Emerald Headingley Stadium.
The Coral Women’s Challenge Cup, which will take place alongside the domestic league competitions, is expected to be bigger and better in 2019 as more teams than ever before enter. The Women’s Final will take place as part of a triple header event alongside the Coral Challenge Cup men’s semi-finals at the University of Bolton Stadium on Saturday, July 27.
The Warriors open their title defence with a highly anticipated blockbuster of a local derby against St Helens Women on Sunday April 7th, at the Robin Park Arena. The Cherry & Whites registered a perfect three wins from three against their rivals last year, and will be looking to continue their form with bragging rights in the opening fixture. The fixture is also due to be streamed live on the Our League App and Website as the Women’s Super League gains more coverage in 2019.
A repeat of the dramatic 2018 Women’s Grand Final will see Wigan face Leeds Rhinos Women on Sunday 12th May at the Robin Park Arena. It was two wins a piece between the two teams last year, and will be a tie that is not to be missed.
Amanda Wilkinson’s side then face a run of four trips away from home, including a trip to Odsal Stadium against Bradford Bulls Women in July before stepping out at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle against Castleford Tigers Women in August. It’s back at home for three games on the bounce before a compelling end to the campaign sees Wigan away from home against St Helens and Leeds Rhinos.
On the announcement, Head Coach Amanda Wilkinson said: “We are very excited for the 2019 Season, our first year in Super League was a huge learning curve but we can take a lot of positives from our first year to help us improve this year. We have had some changes to our squad this year, including the introduction of some new young players, which is great for us to be able to develop them and for the future of the game of Rugby League.
“We want to continue building a positive and professional environment for this fantastic set of Women, nurturing good people on and off the field.”
