Wigan Women record impressive win against British Army RL

FT | Wigan Women 50 - 14 British Army RL Women

Tries from Temple (3), Goodburn, Sibbald, Burrows (2), Grace-Holding, Thompson and Harrison for the Warriors

The Warriors Women ran in ten tries to progress to the quarter-finals of the Coral Women’s Challenge Cup following their 50-14 victory of Army RL on the road, keeping their opponents scoreless in the second half.

It was a physical first half in the Coral Women’s Challenge Cup at Coventry Bears Broadstreet ground. The Army were the first to cross, as the bounce of the ball was misjudged by the Warriors back line and Eatock was there to collect and go over under the sticks in the first minute, converting her own kick to go 6-0 up. The Warriors hit back just moments later though, Temple creating the overlap for Molyneux to get the pass out and it was back to 6-4. It was end to end for many stages of the first forty, with plenty of good defence from Wigan and some inviting hits from the Army keeping it stale.

The Army were back with the ball in hand but a huge defensive tackle from Temple forced the error and Wigan had the head and feed 15m out. Hannah Goodburn took advantage of the opportunity, putting in some good legwork with defenders on her back to get over for her first try of 2019, the effort converted by McMullan to put Wigan ahead for the first time in the match at 10-6.

The Warriors then went on to score three tries in ten minutes to peg the Army back. Amanda Sibbald with a great individual effort, before Alison Burrows sold a dummy to go in under the sticks. Megan Grace-Holding also going over after latching onto a grubber kick from the boot of Charlotte Foley and putting Wigan out to 26-6.

The Army got back into the tie though as Carrie Roberts went in at the left corner after good crossing play, before Doris King got on the scoresheet just before half time, stretching out for the try line after spotting some space, taking it to 26-14 in the Warriors favour at the half time break.

It was very much one way traffic in the second half as both sides began to tire, Alison Burrows grabbed her second of the evening in the 42nd minute, after creating an overlap on the left. Vanessa Temple then followed suit to get her second, the Centre intercepting and racing 60m before getting tackled, but the number 12 got her reward in the follow up to put Wigan out to 36-14 to the good.

The Army were then dealt a blow as Gilmartin was forced to leave the field following a concussion assessment. Mcauley looked to get the Army up the right wing as she skipped away from one defender but Amanda Sibbald bundled her into touch and Wigan had the ball back once more. Rachel Thompson placed an inch perfect cross-field kick on the last, Vanessa Temple picking it out of the air to go in under the sticks and complete her hattrick.

The Warriors completed the attacking display with fantastic solo efforts from Rachel Thompson and Sarah Harrison for the Warriors to get the 50-14 win, and progress to the next stage of the competition.
