Adrian Lam reflects on Wigan Warriors’ 23-14 victory over Leeds Rhinos.
Head Coach says he is ‘proud’ of the team.
Lam: “The first half was probably our best of the season.”
Adrian Lam says he was proud of his side after Wigan Warriors triumphed to victory against Leeds Rhinos at Emerald Headingley Stadium on Friday.
The Head Coach stated the 23-14 win was ‘really important’ in the context of Wigan’s season, as the Cherry and Whites are now two points behind fifth place Castleford Tigers.
Tries from Oliver Gildart, Oliver Partington and Tony Clubb, plus three conversions and two penalties from Chris Hankinson saw the Warriors take the points.
“There was a fair bit of pressure on us and I think the players understood that,” said Lam.
“We knew it would go down to the wire so we were prepped for that. I’m pretty proud of the team. To be able to win these tight games at this time of the year is credit to the players.”
Lam spoke proudly of Wigan’s first half performance, which saw them go into the break with a narrow three-point lead.
“I thought the first half, bar the last error, was probably our best of the season. It was more like the team we wanted to be and it was the best example of how we want to play.”
He added: “I’m proud of the players for having that desire and hunger; we are coming together nicely.”
After falling behind in the second half, Oliver Partington scored his first senior try to put the Warriors back in front.
Along with Morgan Smithies, Lam stated: “I’m excited about them, they are the players who will take this Club forward.
The boss also praised he’s senior players: “In the first 40 minutes, Sean O’Loughlin was probably the best he’s played this year, and with Sam Powell in the centre they were outstanding.”
On Hankinson, Lam said: “We needed a goal kicker and he is probably our best one-on-one defender as well.”
Despite his side moving closer to the top five, Lam isn’t focusing on the Betfred Super League table.
“I’m not one to look at the ladder every week but we talked about being in control of our week-to-week performance, and I’m sure if we do that, the ladder will take care of itself.”

Wigan Warriors made it two consecutive victories in six days after beating Leeds Rhinos 23-14 at Emerald Headingley Stadium.
After going into the break with a narrow 11-8 lead, Wigan fell behind in the second half, before tries from Oliver Partington and Tony Clubb gave the visitors the two points.
It was Leeds who got the first points of the evening, as the Warriors conceded a penalty close to their try line, which Liam Sutcliffe successfully kicking to put his side 2-0 ahead after 16 minutes.
Five minutes later, Wigan took the lead as Gildart made a quick footed run past the Rhinos defence to go over. Chris Hankinson converted the kick to make it 6-2 after 21 minutes.
Hankinson then added another two points to the Warriors score, as he successfully kicked a penalty from 30 metres out to make it 8-2 after 26 minutes.
It was same again not long after, as the Rhinos conceded another penalty Hankinson took advantage of and added another two points to his side’s tally.
With five minutes of the half remaining, Leeds got their first try of the game as Adam Cuthbertson found a gap in the defence to power over. Sutcliffe adds the extras to make it 8-10.
Sam Powell kicked a drop goal for the second game running, as he saw his team go into the break with a 11-8 lead.
The Rhinos stormed out into the second half their, as Trent Merrin scores his side’s second try, with Tui Lolohea adding the two.
Ten minutes later, Lam’s side responded, as Liam Farrell passed neatly to Partington who ran through a gap to score his first try for Wigan under the sticks in front of the travelling away fans. With Hankinson once again successfully converting, the Warriors led 17-14 after an hour of play.
On the sound of the final hooter, Clubb put the cherry on top as he ran 30 metres to go over in the corner to make the full time score 23-14.
