A review of the Academy and Women Origin series games from the weekend.
Lancashire win Academy series while Yorkshire triumph Women series.
12 Wigan players from the Under-19s and Women sides were involved on Saturday and Sunday.
Seven Wigan Under-19s players and five Warrior Women were involved in the two Origin series between Lancashire and Yorkshire at the weekend.
Lancashire Academy won the series 2-1 after a 30-24 victory at Wakefield’s Mobile Rocket Stadium on Saturday.
Wigan’s Umyla Hanley, Ben Holcroft, Sam Halsall, Harry Rushton and Brad O’Neill all played for Lancashire, as Holcroft grabbed a second half try, with Hanley providing the assist. Corey Hall and Amir Bourouh represented Yorkshire.
Lancashire Assistant Coach and Wigan Under-19s Head Coach, Shane Eccles, said: “It was a privilege to be involved in the Lancashire Origin squad. The series has provided a good test for all the players, which saw three tough and intense games.
“It was also great to see a number of our Academy players selected for representative honours.
“Lancashire winning the series was a bonus, however seeing the players deal with a real intense series was great. The series was a brilliant advert for Academy rugby league which hopefully showcased some future Super League stars.”
On Sunday, Yorkshire Women came from behind to beat Lancashire 27-20 and win the Origin series 2-0.
Rebecca Greenfield, Michelle Davis, Vanessa Temple, Vicky Molyneux and Lucy Baggaley all represented the Red Roses in front of a 500-plus crowd at Warrington’s Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Forwards Temple and Molyneux scored a try each, while full-back Greenfield got two assists, but it wasn’t enough as Yorkshire overturned a 20-14 deficit to triumph in the final 20 minutes.
Lancashire Head Coach and former Wigan player, Shaun Briscoe, said: “We didn’t get the result but the game itself was a massive positive for rugby league. It’s been a great occasion.
“It was a scrappy start, then both teams settled down. We bombed a few chances and we’re disappointed to lose. We went 20-14 then switched off. It’s a learning curve.”
