Wane to receive star

Former Wigan Warriors Head Coach Shaun Wane to be recognised for his services to the borough.

Wane spent 30 years at the Club as a player and coach.

58-year-old became a Warriors Life Member in 2018 after leaving the Club with six major titles overall.

Former Wigan Warriors Head Coach Shaun Wane is set to be rewarded with a star in Wigan town centre for his services to the borough.

Wane, 54, spent 30 years at Wigan as a player and coach and became a Life Member when he left the Club at the end of 2018.

On Thursday, he will be recognised for his contribution to the sport with the unveiling of a star in Believe Square. The bespoke paving stones will read: ‘Shaun Wane, Wigan Warriors RL Coach Legend’.

Leader of Wigan Council, Coun David Molyneux said: “Shaun Wane has not only shown commitment to rugby over the years, but he has acted as a role model for younger generations and has inspired them to reach their ambitions.”

After playing 150 games for Wigan between 1981 and 1990, Wane went on to become the Warriors’ longest serving coach in Super League history and fifth longest of all time.

In his eight years as Head Coach, Wane won three Super League titles, one World Club Challenge, one Challenge Cup and one League Leaders’ Shield.

He was in charge for 236 games in all competitions – 161 of those being victories with a 68.2 winning percentage. Wane picked up 145 Super League wins in 214 matches – accumulating to a 67.7 winning percentage. In October 2018, he received his first Super League Coach of the Year award for the first time

During his time at the Club, Wane was praised for his commitment to the Academy, as he gave 41 home-grown players a first team debut, and at the Warriors’ 2018 End of Season Dinner he was inducted as a Life Member.

Wigan Council started to recognise special people in the borough with stars in 2011 and Wane will receive a civic reception to mark the unveiling of his star.

Coun Molyneux stated: “The Believe stars are an acknowledgement of support toward the local community and acts as a thank you for the positive change and pride people have brought to the borough.”
