U19s: Bradford Preview

Post by josie andrews »

Wigan Warriors U19s vs Bradford Bulls U19s, Academy Super League, Robin Park Arena, Saturday 29th June, 12:30pm K.O.

Game will be streamed live on Wigan TV from 12:30pm.

Wigan season ticket holders can watch the game for free. For non-season ticket holders, it is £5 entry for Adults and £3 for Juniors.

Ahead of Saturday’s game against Bradford Bulls at the Robin Park Arena, Wigan Warriors Under-19s Head Coach Shane Eccles says his side are the ones to beat in the Academy Super League.

Wigan are four points clear at the top of the table with 12 wins from 13 in 2019 and are unbeaten at home. The Cherry and Whites also have the best attack with 530 points scored, including 94 tries, as well as the best defence with just 196 points conceded.

Speaking to Wigan TV this week, Eccles said: “As we’re half-way through the year now and we’ve played everyone, every team will know what to expect from us and they’re all going to raise their game to try and get a win over us; we need to rise to that challenge every week.

“We’ve played really well at home this year and we want to continue that form on Saturday.”

The last time Wigan and Bradford met was at the start of May at Odsal Stadium, where the Warriors ran out 44-12 winners, scoring eight tries.

The Bulls are currently seventh in the league with five wins from 13 games and are five points off the play-off places.

Fresh from last week’s derby victory at St Helens, full-back Umyla Hanley says his team know what to expect from Bradford on Saturday.

He said: “Every team wants to be at the top and that’s us right now. Everyone wants to beat us. We know their strengths and weaknesses, but we should roll on.”

Eccles added: “I think we’ll get a real tough and physical game.”

Look out for 18 year old Anesu Mudoti for Bradford, probably off the bench at prop. I'd be interested in any comments on him from anyone who's there.

U19s breeze past Bulls

Match report as Wigan Warriors U19s beat 54-10 Bradford Bulls U19s at the Robin Park Arena.

Nine-try victory keeps Shane Eccles’ side top of the Academy Super League.

Jack Bibby, Sam Halsall, Jack Kennedy, Umyla Hanley (3), Jake Sculthorpe (2) and Oscar Stone with Wigan’s tries.

Umyla Hanley scored a hat-trick and converted nine goals to inspire Wigan Warriors Under-19s to a huge victory over Bradford Bulls on Saturday.

Shane Eccles’ thrashed the Bulls 54-10 at the Robin Park Arena and maintained their four-point lead at the top of the Academy Super League.

First half tries from Jack Bibby, Sam Halsall, Jack Kennedy and two for Hanley saw the Warriors cruising at the break, before second half efforts from Hanley and Oscar Stone, plus two for Jake Sculthorpe saw out the emphatic triumph.

Wigan got the first try of the afternoon, as Bibby crashed over. The Warriors added their second of the afternoon in the 24th-minute, as space opened up for Halsall to score.

Not long after, Eccles’ team got their third, as Kennedy kicked the ball through the Bradford line for himself to chase and go over, after a mistake from the visitors. Full-back then got on the scoresheet, as he outpaced the Bulls defence, with Corey Hall providing the assist after breaking through.

Hanley wasn’t done there, as he made it two in two minutes as he found a way over in the 34th-minute to make it 30-0 at half time, with all five successful conversions.

Despite being reduced to 12 men as Ebon Scurr was sent to the sin-bin, the Bulls got their first try of the game seven minutes into the second half. Billy Jowitt broke through the Wigan line to go over under the sticks. Matthew Race added the extras to make it 30-6.

The Warriors responded soon after and extended their lead back to 30 points, as Sculthorpe dove onto the end of his own deflected grubber kick to get the try.

On the hour mark, Hanley completed his hat-trick in fine fashion with a bursting run through the Bulls defence, courtesy of a Cian Tyrer break. A minute later, forward Stone extended his side’s lead, as he found a gap and dived over the whitewash.

The visitors were able to pull one try back, as Luke Littlewood used his pace down the left edge and went over in the 71st-minute to finish the move. With Race unable to add the two points, the score stood at 48-10.

To round off the afternoon, Sculthorpe added his second in the 79th-minute, after Amir Bourouh broke down field to provide the assist. That try and Hanley’s ninth conversion saw the Warriors complete an impressive 54-10 victory over Bradford to keep their lead at the top of the Academy Super League.

Any report on Bradford prop Mudoti? Obviously hard to shine in a 54-10 defeat.

Umyla Hanley he is a good prospect for the future. All the squad played well limiting Bradford to what was meagre pickings.
The Bradford 3, Ryan Butterworth, kept niggling Umyla, who showed real professional style letting his three tries and 9 conversions do his talking.

Was impressed with Corey Hall, who is only 16, but does not look out of place in the U19's.

Well do to the whole squad and the Coach Shane Eccles.

An interesting game. It started with an arm wrestle until just before half time and then a flurry of tries effectively killed it as a contest. Young Corey Hall looked impressive and Hanley seems to be a chip off the old block. What impressed me most though was the speed and work rate of the big forwards. I know that it is hard to step up but the lads like Havard seem to have the size and speed that we rarely see together in our teams where six foot is considered big and anyone bigger is usually a bit pedestrian. Harvard is 6 feet 3 according to the official site. I am not saying that size is everything but we have had a lot of representative players who have not made it because of a lack of size or speed.
