Wigan Warriors Head Coach Adrian Lam believes his side know what to expect when they host Hull Kingston Rovers on Friday at the DW Stadium (K.O. 7:45pm).

Wigan head into Friday’s game with four wins in a row, a run that began with a win away to the Robins. On Wigan’s recent upturn in form, Lam explained that their is more to come from his side.

“We’ve still got a long way to go and that’s the positive thing. I guess we are probably at a six out of ten. The attitude has changed and everyone understands the way we want to go about things. Now we’ve just got to keep honing that.”

“We are slowly filtering in some young players into our first team squad. That’s what I’m about, I want to try and bring through as many junior players as we possibly can to get them part of the season.”

This week Lam’s side host Hull KR for the first time in 2019. However, only a month has passed since the two sides last met, when Wigan narrowly won 18-19 at KCOM Craven Park.

On the opposition: We’ve got a pretty good idea of what is going to come up against us. Over the last ten weeks they’ve played well as a group and have been in every game.

“They have also seen a lot of changes. Parcell will be one that will certainly improve them.”

The Head Coach also had positive words for the recent performances of full-back Zak Hardaker, who scored in last week’s home victory.

“He missed a game a couple of weeks ago which I think was good for him because he’s played a lot of minutes. But he’s a tough player and since he’s come back he’s certainly brought a spark to us.

“He’s been good in attack but has also offered us plenty in defence as well.”

Wigan made it four wins from their last four after beating Salford Red Devils at home last week. Lam expressed just how happy he was with the win after losing skipper Sean O’Loughlin to an Achilles injury in the opening exchanges.

“I think he [O’Loughlin] has been one of the best players in the competition over the last four weeks. We scrambled a bit for 15 minutes but then we rallied and got back to how we wanted to play.

“The best part was that we did it without him through a couple of the young boys. That’s certainly a positive sign.”


Along with the skipper, the head coach also provided updates on other injuries in the Wigan Warriors squad.

“O’Loughlin is looking to be out for four weeks. Benny Flower is looking at a similar time, so four to five weeks.

“Then we’ve got Joe Greenwood who’s out too. We will follow the protocol of head knocks and the return to the field policy, making sure we do the right thing by that. However we are getting Dan Sarginson back so we’re losing a couple but getting one back”

Much speculation has circulated in the last seven days regarding Salford half-back Jackson Hastings, who has been heavily linked with Wigan. On this Lam said, “We’ve been talking to him for a long time, and so too have other clubs.

“Every club would love his services on their books and I get along with him personally. I’m sure if he wants to come to Wigan, the Club will announce that when the time is right to announce it. Fingers crossed that is the case.”

In recent weeks the Head Coach has also been asked about his own future at Wigan.

On his future: “I’ve started communications [With the Club] and I’m happy that’s underway now. With regards to the outcome, it may take two weeks, but it’s positive, so we will see.”

Without being funny, after one of his previous concussions I thought the club doctor would have recommended he wear a skull cap for the rest of the season. How many times this season is this now?

One more and I think he will need "resting" for the season as Hull did with Albert Kelly last season

I did notice at salford that greenwood stays down alot, its a shame as his initial form when he came to us was outstanding.

Wigan Warriors duo sidelined by injury

Sean O'Loughlin is out of Friday's game against Hull KR - and England team-mate Joe Greenwood has joined him on the sidelines.

Captain O'Loughlin is facing a lay-off of up to four weeks with an Achilles injury suffered in the opening minute of the 28-12 win against Salford.

And Greenwood is out for an indefinite period as Wigan follow protocols for returning to the pitch after a head knock.

The backrower is to see a specialist and Lam said: "Joe is out indefinitely, we're following concussion protocols and return to play protocols.

Until he's seen a specialist we won't know how long he may be out for, we just don't know - I'm not going to speculate on a time-frame."

O'Loughlin's absence will be a blow but Lam was thankful the injury was not more serious.

"He's got a thickening of the Achilles so there's no bad damage there, when you look at the other side, it could have been a lot worse," he said.

"I think Sean has been one of the best players in the competition for the past four weeks.

He's an important member of our team but in saying that, we've played some good rugby without him this year and we'll get by without him. The challenge is there for some players to step up and I'm excited about seeing some of the young players."

Liam Farrell (knee) will return from a week off and Dan Sarginson's availability could move centre Chris Hankinson into the pack. Prop Ben Flower is still sidelined after tearing ligaments in his back.

"Before he was injured, Sarge was probably our best player in the two games leading up to that," said Lam, who will name a 19-man squad tomorrow.
