Warriors beat Bulls

Wigan Warriors Women take an important victory against Bradford Bulls Women at Odsal Stadium.

Full-time: Bradford Bulls Women 16-20 Wigan Warriors Women.

Tries from Megan Grace-Holding, Carys Marsh, Gemma Walsh and Vanessa Temple for the Warriors.

Wigan Warriors Women overturned a 12-point deficit to pick up a 20-16 victory on the road against Bradford Bulls on Sunday afternoon.

Tries from Megan Grace-Holding, Carys Marsh, Gemma Walsh and Vanessa Temple saw Kris Ratcliffe’s side cement their place in the top four and go two points clear of the Bulls who are fifth in the Women’s Super League.

It was a solid contest in the opening stages at Odsal, but it was Bradford who scored first as Sarah Dunn broke the line and raced under the sticks in the fifth minute. Leah Jones added the extras to put her team 6-0 up.

The Warriors responded well though with an attacking set forcing a goal line drop out from a Walsh kick on the last tackle. Wigan got the ball back and created an overlap on the left to send Grace-Holding over in the corner. Foley was just off target with the touchline kick so the score stood at 6-4.

Bradford got their second try of the afternoon on the 21st-minute. This time, gaining field position from a Wigan offside - the hosts worked the space well to send Hayley Hields over on the left edge to extend their lead. Jones missed the kick but the Bulls had a 10-4 advantage.

The home side extended their lead from the restart in the second half. Amy Hardcastle collected the ball from the kick-off and raced 70 metres to go under the sticks. Jones added the conversion to nudge the Bulls further in front at 16-4.

Wigan reacted to that setback as they cut the deficit just moments later. Marsh dove over from short range to get the Warriors back in reaching distance. The conversion was added by Foley to make it 16-10.

The Cherry and Whites clawed another one back in the 53rd-minute, as captain Walsh pushed the defenders out of her way and crashed over on the left. The conversion was just wide by Foley and the score was 16-14 in Bradford’s favour.

Wigan’s Temple muscled her way over in the 61st-minute, putting Ratcliffe’s side ahead for the first time in the match. Foley added the conversion and the visitors now had a 20-16 lead.

Wigan continued to turn the screw with the clock ticking down, forcing Bradford to work hard in defence.

But as the Bulls went for a game-winning try in the dying minutes, Wigan’s Alison Burrows stopped a certain score. Dunn looked to add to her tally on the left edge but the Warriors’ No.2 put in a huge one-on-one effort to put the Bradford attacker into touch.

The away side held on for an important and hard-earned triumph on the road, which sees move onto four wins from seven games this season.

Bradford Bulls Women: Leah Jones, Alexander Bailey, Stacey Greenwood, Sarah Dunn, Savannah Andrade, Jess Harrop, Amy Boardman, Olivia Wood, Grace Ramsden, Debbie Smith, Amy Hardcastle, Paige Costello, Manina Spurr.

Bradford Bulls Women Interchanges: Lauren Hickey, Hayley Hields, Adamara Telemacque, Heather Mcdonald.

Tries: Dunn, Hields, Hardcastle

Goals: Jones 2/3

Wigan Warriors Women: Rebecca Greenfield, Megan Grace-Holding, Rachel Thompson, Emily Baggaley, Alison Burrows, Gemma Walsh, Charlotte Foley, Holly Speakman, Carys Marsh, Natalie Watson, Amanda Sibbald, Vanessa Temple, Victoria Molyneux.

Interchanges: Claire Hall, Jade Gregory-Haselden, Eleanor Dainty, Leah Darbyshire.

Tries: Grace-Holding, Marsh, Walsh, Temple

Goals: Foley 2/4

On the game, Wigan Head Coach Ratcliffe said: “It certainly wasn’t a pretty game for us, we had to work really hard for that win and at times I was concerned that we weren’t going to come up with the result. The girls dug deep and showed great character to come up with a win.

“To come here, when you’re away from home and down against a difficult side and come up with a result is a positive, but there were a few negatives that we need to work on as well.”

On the performance from his side, Ratcliffe commented: “We got drawn into playing a game that we had spoken about avoiding - a battle up the middle. We allowed Bradford to slow us down, we played far too many times up the middle and they’ve got a big pack.

“They controlled our ruck speed all the time and that made it really difficult because if you play a slow game against a big set, they usually come out on top.”

Victoria Molyneux picked up both the Our League and Coaches’ Player of the Match. On her involvement, the boss said: “She’s had a lot of great performances and she brings energy and drive, and a never say die attitude.

“It’s a certain that if we had come into this game without her we wouldn’t have got that win. She lifted them up, and dragged them out of a hole herself by running hard, tackling hard and talking all the way through; she was vital to us getting the win.”

Wigan Warriors Women face Featherstone Rovers on the road in the next round of the Women’s Super League on Sunday 4th August, 2pm K.O.
