U19s Preview: Warrington

Post by josie andrews »

Shane Eccles looks ahead to Saturday’s Academy Super League fixture between Wigan and Warrington.

Wigan Warriors U19s vs Warrington Wolves U19s, Academy Super League, Robin Park Arena, Saturday 27th July, 10:30am K.O.

Wigan season ticket holders can watch the game for free. For non-season ticket holders, it is £5 entry for Adults and £3 for Juniors.

Under-19s Head Coach Shane Eccles says he will learn about his players’ ‘character’ when Wigan Warriors host Warrington Wolves on Saturday (K.O. 10:30am).

The Cherry and Whites return to the Robin Park Arena after three weeks away and Eccles believes it will be a test for his side to adapt to the unusual morning kick-off time.

He said: “We know Warrington will be fired up for this game with it being a north west clash. This provides another challenge and these are the kind of games we’re we learn a lot about the players’ character.

“We have played really well so far this season at home and we are aiming to continue that this weekend.

There are some different challenges for the players this week with the game being a 10:30am kick-off. The lads have probably not played a morning game since they played community club rugby so it will be interesting to see how they deal with the early kick-off.”

After a nine-match winning run, Wigan have a three-point lead ahead of Leeds Rhinos at the top of the Academy Super League, having played a game less.

The Warriors go into Saturday’s fixture off the back of a 26-10 victory at Huddersfield Giants two weeks ago and the boss feels his side have prepared well for the Warrington clash.

“We have had a good week of training this week. We did some work on our defence early in the week on a few areas where we feel we can improve. Then on Thursday we had a joint session with the first team which is great for our players to see what level they are at and where they need to improve to get into that first team squad.”

The Wolves currently sit fifth in the league and one point outside of the play-off places, something which Eccles is aware of as he spoke about the previous meeting between the two teams - Wigan came out on top with a 32-18 win at Victoria Park in March.

He commented: “We’re really looking forward to a good game with Warrington. We faced them early in the season and it was an entertaining end-to-end game. I believe Warrington are one of the teams in the mix for the play-offs so we know this is going to be a tough test to see how we have improved recently.”

Please note this game will NOT be shown on Wigan TV. However, highlights will be available from Monday 29th July.

Alternatively, Wigan Warriors season ticket holders can watch the game for free at the Robin Park Arena.

For non-season ticket holders, it is £5 entry for Adults and £3 for Juniors.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
