U16s: Huddersfield Preview

Head Coach Anthony Atherton looks ahead to Thursday’s Under-16s Scholarship fixture between Wigan and Huddersfield.

Wigan season ticket holders can watch the game for free. For non-season ticket holders, it is £5 entry for Adults and £3 for Juniors.
Under-16s Head Coach Anthony Atherton is hoping his side can relish the opportunity to play at the Robin Park Arena on Thursday night as Wigan Warriors play their final game of the season against Huddersfield Giants.
The Cherry and Whites have won four of their six games this year, with triumphs coming against Widnes Vikings, Warrington Wolves, Wakefield Trinity and Newcastle Thunder.
And with victory in the final 80 minutes of the year on Thursday, Atherton’s team would make it four wins in a row since the end of June.
Ahead of the game, the Head Coach said: “It’s been a long season. We started training in September and it’s now the first week of August. There’s been six games, which started in February – we had a block of three games, then we had a break through the exam season.
“We’ve had our last three games in quick succession – having them every other week since the end of June. It’s given us a lot more rhythm as a squad to get things in place and the players have been fully focused.
“For the Under-16s to play at the Robin Park Arena for the first time is a fantastic opportunity. It’s a great, new facility for the Club.
“The first team train there and the Under-19s train and play there, and now we’re going to start playing there too, which is a mark of intent of what the Club does and how it looks after the youth players coming through the ranks.”
Atherton believes the new High Performance Training Centre at the Robin Park Arena provides more unity within the Club, as he identifyed the benefits it has for the young players in the Academy.
“On Monday, for example, the first team were in training, then the Under-19s trained after them, before we went on and trained too.
“The new facility gives that continuity between the players and the familiarity between the staff and the players too. They are all players who are representing Wigan, albeit at different age grades, but it’s great to be all on one side and all in the same place.”
Looking ahed to the final game of the season, the boss reflected on the 2019 campaign, stating the ‘development’ of the players as being the main factor.
“It’s been a good season for us. We’re not measured on a league table and not so much results, despite it being good to win and every coach will have that in the back of their mind, but it’s about seeing the players develop and as people too.
“Seeing them develop is the most important thing for us and we’ll probably be measured in around three to five years’ time when the players are hopefully progressing into the first team.”
Atherton also praised Thursday’s opposition, Huddersfield, as he says the Giants will provide his team with a tough test.
“They’ll be a strong side. Huddersfield are always a determined group. Andy Kelly, who is their Head of Youth, has a really good philosophy of hard-working players, so it will be a tricky game.”
Thursday night’s game will be streamed live on Wigan TV from 7pm.
