Hull KR Preview

Post by josie andrews »

Everything you need to know for Friday night’s Betfred Super League clash between Wigan Warriors and Hull Kingston Rovers.

The Brief

Wigan Warriors return to the DW Stadium on Friday night as they host Hull KR in Round 25 of the Betfred Super League.

It’s been three weeks since Adrian Lam’s side last played on home turf. After a week off following the 46-16 win over Wakefield Trinity, the Warriors got back into the swing of things last Thursday with a 15-14 victory over Hull FC at the KCOM Stadium.

The Cherry and Whites have now won seven of their last eight games in the league, and that form has seen them move within two points of third placed Hull FC and four off second placed Warrington Wolves with five games to go.

As for visitors, Hull KR, they go into Friday’s game off the back of a huge 27-26 Golden Point win over Castleford Tigers last Sunday, as the Robins moved themselves two points above the foot of the table.

Wigan and Hull KR have already met twice this year, with the Warriors coming out on top on both occasions.

A Sam Powell 40-metre drop-goal won the game 19-18 late on for Lam’s side at KCOM Craven Park back in June, while a Liam Marshall hat-trick and a brace from Liam Farrell helped Wigan to cruise to a 52-10 thumping at the DW Stadium last month.

Will the Warriors make it three out of three against the Robins in 2019 and put more pressure on third place Hull FC or can Hull KR cause a surprise at the DW and move further away from threatened relegation?

Team News
Speaking to the media earlier this week, Lam confirmed that new signing Bevan French would be available for selection for Friday’s game. Read his match preview HERE.

On Monday, the Club announced that captain Sean O’Loughlin, who suffered a pectoral injury last Thursday against Hull FC, could return to action before the end of the season. However, the loose forward is ruled out for selection this week. Learn more HERE.

The Cherry and White ranks are bolstered this week with the return of two experienced forwards in the shape of Ben Flower and Joe Greenwood. Flower has been out of action following a back injury sustained in Wigan’s win away to Hull KR on 9th June. Greenwood last featured for the Warriors on Friday 28th June against Salford Red Devils at the DW Stadium.

Prop forward Joe Bullock misses out as he recovers from a knee injury sustained vs St Helens on Friday 12th July.

Long-term absentees Dom Manfredi (knee) and Tom Davies (ankle) remain on the comeback trail.

The Opposition

Hull KR are one of four teams level on 28 points at the bottom end of the Super League standings, with nine wins and 15 defeats this season.

However, their relegation fears were eased a little with a dramatic win over Castleford last weekend. Rovers are currently 11th in the league, one place above London Broncos.

The statistics are there to see though for Tony Smith’s side this campaign, as they have the second worst defence and attack in Super League.

The Robins do have some form going into Friday’s game though, with five wins from their last seven league games.

In team news, loose forward Kyle Trout is named in the 19-man squad for the first time after signing for Rovers from Dewsbury Rams on Monday. Will Dagger is recalled following his recent return from a loan spell at Featherstone Rovers.

Half-back Mikey Lewis is also selected in Smith’s squad and could make his Super League debut, but there is no place for winger Craig Hall or forwards Mitch Garbutt and Owen Harrison.

Here is Hull KR’s 19-man squad:

Adam Quinlan, Ben Crooks, Jimmy Keinhorst, Ryan Shaw, Danny McGuire, Robbie Mulhern, Mose Masoe, Joel Tomkins, Weller Hauraki, Chris Atkin, Danny Addy, George Lawler, Josh Drinkwater, Will Dagger, Mikey Lewis, Daniel Murray, Dean Hadley, Jez Litten, Kyle Trout.

Coach Quotes

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Head Coach Adrian Lam, said: “Every Club is aiming for the top three to give themselves a chance at the competition. The last three months have been pretty good for us and although we feel we’ve still got some improving to do, it certainly helped us with regards to the ladder.

“We feel we have two or three levels left in us yet. We are training really well and our performances have been consistent. We are winning games and there was definitely a semi-final feel about the game last weekend. It’s a great sign for us that we were able to win it.”

On facing Hull KR for the third time this season, he commented: “I know they will come here with a lot of enthusiasm and they’ve got a few new players since the last time we played them. We’ve certainly got a lot of respect for them. We’re not going into this week not respecting them in any way.

The priority for us is that we understand they are coming off a big win. They’re a massive threat to us reaching our goals and they’ve got some great players too.”

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
