U16s sign off in style

Match report as Wigan Warriors’ Scholarship team finish the 2019 season with a 44-20 win over Huddersfield Giants.

A 13-minute hat-trick from Ethan Fitzgerald helped the Under-16s to victory at the Robin Park Arena.

Alex Sutton (2), Logan Astley (2), Reagan Sumner and Jamie Wilde with Wigan’s other tries.

An Ethan Fitzgerald hat-trick inside the opening 13 minutes inspired Wigan Warriors Under-16s to a 44-20 victory over Huddersfield Giants at the Robin Park Arena on Thursday.

In what was their final game of the 2019 season, Anthony Atherton’s side won their fourth consecutive outing and made it five from seven this campaign.

Three tries from Fitzgerald, braces from Alex Sutton and Logan Astley, plus efforts from Reagan Sumner and Jamie Wilde saw off a battling Giants outfit.

Wigan’s Scholarship team got things going in the sixth minute as Fitzgerald finished off a smooth move of passes down the left edge, before adding a second four minutes later with a carbon copy touch down.

The winger grabbed his hat-trick try in the 13th-minute, courtesy of a third Sutton assist, as Astley produced a fine chip to the left side for the centre to find Fitzgerald who dived over the whitewash.

Sutton then turned try scorer as some quick hands allowed him to find a gap in the Huddersfield defence to stroll over under the posts. Three conversions from four for Zach Eckersley put the Warriors 22-0 ahead and in firm control.

However, the Giants crossed over twice before half-time, as left sided due Connor Carr and William Pryce scored a try each, catching out Wigan’s right edge defence.

Three minutes into the second half, the home side responded with two tries in succession, as Sutton claimed his second of the night by beating the chasing Giants pack to a neat kick to the left corner. Winger Sumner got on the scoresheet too as he broke through the Huddersfield line from inside his own half and out-paced the defenders to dart over.

On the hour mark, Astley got in on the act as Matty Nicholson made the break and found the supporting scrum-half who finished with strength on the left side.

The visitors reacted with two tries in the space of eight minutes, as Carr and Pryce got their second tries with two individual efforts. The latter converted both touch downs.

But two more tries in the remaining three minutes from the Warriors saw off that Huddersfield revival. Wilde found space and eased over in the 77th-minute, before Astley rounded off the result with Wigan’s ninth try of the night. Kicker Eckersley added one goal in the second half, which completed the 44-20 victory.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
