Morgan Smithies not Great Britain standard just yet, says Adrian Lam

Post by josie andrews »

Wigan coach Adrian Lam has been amazed by Morgan Smithies’ astonishing start to his career – but he believes the Great Britain tour is a bit early for the rising star.

Smithies burst onto the Super League scene earlier this year in a 42-0 win over Catalans, going on to play 18 games for the Warriors.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

I think with Smithies, we have finally found the replacement for SOL.

I see all our young lads regularly & I told Morgan when he progressed to the U19's that if he carried on progressing he would be our next loose forward, he said then that he hoped so.

When he progressed to the first team, I said exactly the same & that if he kept following Lockers, he would become a world class loose forward 😊

There can’t be a like for like replacement for SOL. He’s the last of a kind.
A player that can play loose forward, prop forward or stand off. They dont exist.
I hope Morgan goes on to be a star, but players like Lockers don’t come around very often.

Well we certainly don't want Smithies disappearing off on tour. He should stay at home, have a rest and then have a full preseason at Wigan ready for next season.

I think Smithies will win "rookie" of the year and will be a contender for "young player" of the year. I don't think he's ready for G.B. but could, and probably deserves to be in the England Knights squad.

I don't think he's an O'Loughlin but has a lot of John Bateman traits in him.
