Zak Hardaker reflects on Wigan Warriors’ 24-16 victory over Wakefield Trinity.

The fullback was pleased to come away with a ‘scrappy’ victory, that sees the Warriors move up to second in the Betfred Super League table.”

Hardaker: “Getting the two points was our objective.”

Zak Hardaker was pleased that Wigan Warriors were able to come away with two points after a ‘scrappy’ 24-16 victory over Wakefield Trinity at the Mobile Rocket Stadium.

After going into half time level, two second half tries sealed Wigan’s tenth win in 11 games.

Despite not being the Warriors’ best performance of recent weeks; the fullback is happy they were able to fight for the victory.

“Getting the two points was our objective before the game. We didn’t really play well, but we’ll take credit for getting the win after a scrappy performance.”

The 27-year-old also admits the weather conditions also played its part during the match.

“We did a team run in the rain so it wasn’t too bad, but it did take us a bit off guard. The conditions were also a bit windy to start with, but we stuck in.”

Hardaker in action against Wakefield

Hardaker praised Wigan’s opponents, Wakefield, for making it a difficult test for Adrian Lam’s side.

“They are a bit of a bogey team, when they chuck the ball around they are dangerous. They were good in areas, whilst we were poor in others, so that evened the game up a little bit.”

He continues, “we talked about hanging in there because the crowd was really on top of us, but our fans were also really good and turned out in their numbers.”

The victory sees the Warriors go up to second in the Betfred Super League table, with two games remaining.

“We are now two points ahead of the others around us, but we’ve got two vital games left so hopefully we can finish the season off in second.”

The fullback also had praise for team mate, Liam Marshall, who scored a hat trick against Trinity.

“He’s brilliant,” states Hardaker. “He’s lightening quick and very good on his feet, so if you give him that space then he will punish you

In our hands: Marshall

Liam Marshall reflects on Wigan Warriors’ 24-16 victory over Wakefield Trinity at the Mobile Rocket Stadium.

The winger scored a hat trick in the win that moved the Warriors up to second in the Betfred Super League table.

Marshall: “All that matters is helping the team to win.”
Liam Marshall believes Wigan Warriors need to keep winning games to secure second place after his hat trick helped the team on their way to a 16-24 victory over Wakefield Trinity.
The Warriors’ recent form has seen them win ten of their last eleven games, with the most recent moving them up to second in the Betfred Super League table.

“Four months ago it was something we could’ve only dreamed of,” says Marshall. “We’ve started playing some good rugby at the right time, if we can keep this position then it’ll put us in a good position going into the playoffs.”

He adds, “it’s in our hands now but if we’re going to be in the Grand Final we will need to win the next two games.

The winger bagged himself a hat trick in the victory at the Mobile Rocket Stadium, but states his main focus was getting the result for his side.

“Getting a hat trick is pretty good but all that matters is helping the team to win.”

To complete his hat trick, Marshall ran the length of the field to go over the try line in the second half, to edge Adrian Lam’s side in front.

“It’s one of them where you hope the chaser gives up but, to be fair to him, he didn’t. Too many long rangers don’t do the legs much good in the latter stages of a game.”

At half time the two teams went into the changing rooms level at 12-12.

“They would’ve been much happier, we gifted them field positions and didn’t have too much of the ball down there end. The errors aren’t acceptable and will bite us in the big games.”

He continues, “it was always going to be a tough match because they have a lot to play for. Everyone knows Wakefield is a tough place to come, and they showed their potential, but that sort of game puts us in good stead.”
