We're still fighting: Burgess

Post by josie andrews »

Joe Burgess looks ahead to Wigan Warriors’ next game against Catalans Dragons at the DW Stadium on Friday night.

The winger believes the clash will be a ‘big game’ as the Warriors look to secure second place in the Betfred Super League table.”

Burgess: “The confidence we have is showing in games.”

Joe Burgess is expecting a ‘big game’ when Wigan Warriors welcome Catalans Dragons to the DW Stadium on Friday night.

Adrian Lam’s side moved into second place in the Betfred Super League table after their victory against Wakefield Trinity on Sunday afternoon.

Burgess states how important it is for the Warriors to win their two final games of the regular season; but also knows that their remaining two opponents will make it tough.

“It will be a big game because we need to secure that second spot. Catalans and Castleford will make it difficult for us because any team coming to the DW wants to turn us over, regardless of their situation.”

Burgess in training this week

Ahead of their game against the Dragons, Wigan have been cementing their game plan and recovering from the Wakefield game.

“When there is short turnaround training is just about ticking over and making sure we know our roles. Games away against Trinity always feel tough, so when Powell went over you could see how buzzing we were.”

Throughout this season, the Warriors’ form has improved week on week, and now find themselves on a run of ten wins in 11 games.

Burgess notes how ‘confident’ the squad is heading into the backend of the season and into the playoffs.

“We have timed it right again and come good at the business end of the season. The confidence we have behind us and that is showing in games.”

He adds jokingly, “We were just teasing all the fans, going from almost relegation to second place.”

Burgess scored three tries vs Catalans at the DW Stadium earlier this season

The last time the Warriors came up against Catalans was at the Nou Camp, where the Perpignan team came away 33-16 winners.

“We don’t want another performance like that,” says the 24-year-old. “It was an embarrassing display, so we need to be patient and work on getting a better result.”

Wigan did record a much more positive result when the two teams met at the DW Stadium back in March, producing a 42-0 victory, with Burgess bagging himself a hat trick.

“Hopefully their will be more of the same, Marshy went over for a hat trick last week so hopefully I can get one on Friday. Whether I score or not, I just want to help the team out as much as I can because it is about getting that win.”

A few familiar faces will return to the DW as part of Steve McNamara’s squad, including Sam Tomkins, Lewis Tierney and Michael McIlorum.

“Old team mates always give that bit more when you play against them. Catalan’s have got some big players, with some threatening forwards.”

He continues, “these games are not practice for the playoffs because we are still fighting for second, but we want to play well to secure our spot for the big games.”

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
