Wigan Warriors Head Coach Adrian Lam believes his side are ‘hungry’ for success as they head into Thursday’s crucial Betfred Super League fixture vs Castleford Tigers (K.O. 7:45pm).

The race for play-off places reaches a conclusion this week with the final round of Betfred Super League fixtures. Wigan can secure second place on Thursday with a win over visitors Castleford who themselves are battling for a place in the top five.

Lam on the final round: “It’s really important to us now that it’s in reach. We’ve done pretty good to get to where we are and you can see how hard we’ve worked to get into this position.

“It’s in our hands now and I think the players look motivated, they look hungry, they’ve trained really well, they’re playing for each other and that’s really important.”

He continued, “Everyone bar St Helens has something to play for this weekend. It’s been a great competition this year, it’s gone by really fast and it’s going down to the wire to see who finishes where on the table.”

This week’s opponents Castleford are also in the hunt for a play-off place and head into Thursday’s game with five wins from their last seven games.

On Castleford: “They are going pretty good Cas, it’ll be a tough game no doubt. They are desperate to finish in the five and they need to do that on Thursday night.

“They are a skilful side who have defended really well in the back end of the season. It was a tough win in torrential rain last time here over them.”

18 year-old forward Morgan Smithies was named in the shortlist for the Betfred Super League’s Young Player of the year Award on Monday.

On the youngster’s nomination, Lam said, “I’m really happy for him. He’s been absolutely sensational for us this year. He’s everything that a Wigan player needs to be. He carries our values both on and off the field.”

Lam also provided an update on players potentially returning from injury ahead of the Castleford game on Thursday.

“Ben Flower and Sean O’Loughlin both have a chance this week, it’s probably 50/50. They trained with us today and both looked good. Hopefully they will be fit for Thursday’s game.”

The Head Coach also highlighted the likely absence of second-row Liam Farrell, who is expected to receive a ban for a tackle during last week’s match vs Catalans Dragons which also earned Farrell a yellow card on the evening.

“Looks like he will be suspended for a week. We will have to decide who goes in there in his place.”
