Adrian Lam's season has consisted of pressure, injuries and the rise of Wigan Warriors’ youngsters.

Young Player of the Year nominee, Morgan Smithies, has been one of many Wigan youngsters who has impressed in the Cherry and White, and one of many reasons for Lam to be bursting with pride.

“I’m really proud of the youngsters coming through, I’ve been a big supporter of bringing them through.

“That’s because of my philosophy, I love developing them and love seeing them, they are our future at Wigan.

“Morgan Smithies hasn’t even had a pre-season with the club yet, I’m looking forward to seeing how he progresses.

“The highlight is the fact that they are good young kids with no attitudes, and they’ve kept their feet grounded, knowing that they may not have had this opportunity otherwise,” said Lam.

A difficult start to the season for Lam’s side saw them rock bottom – the points deduction didn’t help them – but the return of Liam Farrell and the announcement of Lam to stay as Wigan boss for 2020 coincided with their turn of form.

“As a coach myself I’ve learnt so much, not even about Rugby League, we’ve had some players sent home, and because of that, we’ve had some of the younger players put on the jersey and they’ve stood up and I’m really proud of them.

“We haven’t had Sean O’Loughlin and Liam Farrell in every game, but they’ve been great with the younger ones and helped their progress.

“Faz’s return to the team coincided with the time and success of the club,” admitted Lam.

Farrell missed Wigan’s fixture last Friday night, but he could return from suspension to take another youngster, Oliver Partingon’s position, after he was cited by the match review panel for striking with the arm.
