French is special: Leuluai

Tommy Leuluai analyses Wigan Warriors’ 16-10 victory over Warrington Wolves in the opening round of the Betfred Super League season.

Tommy Leuluai has praised teammate Bevan French after a sparkling Man of the Match display in Wigan Warriors’ win over Warrington Wolves on Thursday night.
Full-back French was in great form for the Warriors on the opening night of the Betfred Super League, as he claimed a try and an assist, leaving Leuluai impressed by the display.
Leuluai said: “He is a special player, I haven’t seen many like him for a while. His natural flare and the ability to read plays in order to create something out of nothing is special.
“If people asked me who impressed in pre-season, he is often the first player off my tongue. He is a really good fella too who has fitted in really well and he’s only going to get better. Let his form continue because he will improve and so will we.”
On reflection of the 16-10 victory at the DW Stadium, Leuluai says there is ‘plenty to work’ on.
The 34-year-old said: “It was obviously good to get the win, but there is still plenty to work on. It’s the perfect scenario for me, to get the two points but to still have stuff to improve on is what you want at this time of the year.
“If you come out playing perfect football at this time of the year, then it’s guaranteed you can’t keep that up for 32 games.”
Warrington played most of the match with reduced numbers, with Chris Hill being sent off in the first half and Mike Cooper later being sent to the sin bin.
Adrian Lam’s Wigan also needed to adapt their positions, with Sam Powell leaving the field following Hill’s dangerous high tackle.
Leuluai said: “It was a bit of a weird game with them going down to 12 men, then losing another. The positional thing for us was hard, but you have to give credit to Warrington. The biggest thing for us is the giving away some silly penalties that kept them in it - we needed a bit more discipline.”
Heading into next Friday’s away trip to the Mend-A-Hose Jungle to face Castleford Tigers, Leuluai believes the Warriors’ main focus will be on their own performance.
“We will look at Cas (Castleford) because they are a good team with really good players, but there is so much improvement for us. There is enough in our game for us just to focus on ourselves. If we get that right then I’m pretty confident we will have a good go.”
