Head Coach Adrian Lam previews Wigan’s visit to Huddersfield Giants in Round 5 of the Betfred Super League

“We’ve worked really hard on starting well and making sure we are better disciplined.” Lam

Huddersfield Giants vs Wigan Warriors, Sunday 1st March, John Smith’s Stadium, K.O. 3pm.

Wigan Warriors Head Coach Adrian Lam expects a tough game when his side takes on Huddersfield Giants away from home this Sunday in Round 5 of the Betfred Super League (K.O. 3pm).

The Warriors head into this weekend in good form, with three wins from the opening four Betfred Super League rounds.

On the good start to the season the Head Coach said, “We’ve worked really hard on starting well and making sure we are better disciplined than against Castleford two weeks ago.

“It’s nice to know our players have responded to that challenge and in doing so it means we have been completing high and minimising errors such as penalties.”

Huddersfield too have had a great start to the season, winning three-from-three so far in 2020.

On Sunday’s opposition: “They’ve got a couple of smart halves, they’ve got a good pack who work hard for each other and have had three good wins. It’s always a tough game when we go away there.

“They will be hard to beat there but if we keep improving on the things we’ve been trying to achieve and make sure we back our defence and keep them quiet then hopefully we can come away with the win.”

Lam also highlighted the performances of Aidan Sezer. “He’s slipped in pretty good, he’s a great organising half and has clearly got the respect of his teammates already.”

On Tuesday it was announced that second-row Joe Greenwood would head out on a two-month loan to join Leeds Rhinos.

On the reasoning behind the move: “With the players that are playing there [second-row] in Willie Isa and Liam Farrell it’s going to be hard for Joe to get a start, the best case is off the bench.

“We think there is a chance for him to play every week there [Leeds Rhinos]. Hopefully playing Super League for the next eight weeks will keep him in good shape rather than just time off the bench or reserve grade. So, it’s of benefit to the Club.”

Lam also provided an update on players who may make a return from injury this week.

“It’s a day-to-day one for him [George Burgess] this week. He has to prove himself this week and if he can train well in every session as he has done today [Wednesday] then he is likely to play and will make the 21.”

The Head Coach also highlighted that forward Ben Flower has a 50/50 chance of being available this Sunday.

The 49 year-old provided an update on skipper Sean O’Loughlin, who after seeing a specialist about his eye injury, is not to train for the next two weeks. Lam detailed that the loose forward would likely be out for four weeks.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
