Keeping ahead: O'Loughlin

Post by josie andrews »

We catch up with Wigan Warriors skipper Sean O’Loughlin to see how the squad are getting on during the coronavirus pandemic.

Loose forward says his side are keeping ahead with their fitness and health regimes.

O’Loughlin: Meeting up and being in close quarters with each other isn’t ideal at the minute, so it is strange but I know everyone is trying to do their bits away from the Club and trying to stay as fit and healthy as they can.”

Sean O’Loughlin says his Wigan Warriors side are staying ‘fit and healthy’ during the coronavirus pandemic.

With the Betfred Super League suspended at least until the 3rd April and squad training disrupted, the Warriors are having to train individually at home.

But the skipper insisted his team are doing everything they can to keep on top of fitness and wellbeing.

O’Loughlin said: “It’s something no one has ever been through so it’s strange but we’re going along with what we’ve been told. We trust the processes that are in place from the government and we’re going along with that.

“We’re not going to play for a number of weeks so it’s about ticking over, individually and as a team – stay fit and health and then when we do get the nod to go back into training properly – everyone is ready to go.

There’s plenty of chat in the players WhatsApp group. Meeting up and being in close quarters with each other isn’t ideal at the minute, so it is strange but I know everyone is trying to do their bits away from the Club and trying to stay as fit and healthy as they can.

“And then we do go back into training – the idea is that we wouldn’t have fell too far behind or lost too much time and we can crack on with the rest of the season.

“Most of the boys enjoy the training side so it doesn’t come as a chore – the obstacles are where to do it and the ways to do it – without putting yourself at any further risk. It’s about finding ways to keep out and about but not in big groups.”

The loose forward is staying optimistic and shared his anticipation for when the action resumes on the pitch again.

“I think you can put rugby to one side when people’s health is a concern. Rugby is part of people’s lives so when all of this is over, it will be great for us to get back playing and also for the community to look forward to getting back watching us on the pitch.”

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
