Bevan French will soon be back on board at Wigan Warriors

Post by josie andrews »

Bevan French is set to return to Wigan this month to start preparing for the Super League season to restart.

The exciting full-back has been in his native Australia since the lockdown began.

He is hoping to secure a flight back next week, revealed coach Adrian Lam.

Because of government rules surrounding coronavirus, he will then need to self-isolate for two weeks, clearing him to start training – and venturing outside – from July.

Super League and RFL bosses are still hopeful of a return to action in mid-August. It is unclear when Wigan and other clubs may choose to return to training.

Talks between both governing bodies, as well as medical experts and stadium officials, are taking place this week to ensure the necessary safe environments are in place when players are back.

French returned to Australia after Wigan’s last match, against Salford, due to a family issue.

He had planned to return the following week.

But with the season halted in the days while he was in Australia, it made sense for him to stay closer to his loved ones and train on his own there.

Wigan’s other overseas players – Jackson Hastings, Thomas Leuluai, Mitch Clark and Willie Isa – have stayed in the UK for the duration of the lockdown, as has coach Adrian Lam.

French started this season in scorching form in the full-back role, and is fourth in the leaderboard for the Steve Prescott Man of Steel.

The former Parramatta ace, who is under contract until the end of 2021, arrived midway through last season and quickly became a fans’ favourite.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Just perhaps if someone had been thinking ahead he would have come back last week??

I think what's implied is that if Bevan had returned last week he'd have avoided the need to self isolate for two weeks. Still, there's plenty ways of getting around that rule.

If he wants then

If he wants to avoid the two weeks isolation then fly into Dublin. Don't through book but book again on a flight from there to Manchester or Liverpool.

A longer way but to avoid any UK customs at all would be to drive from Dublin to Belfast and get the ferry from there to Liverpool (Birkenhead). Dump the hire car at Belfast ferry terminal and travel as a foot passenger. Cheap as chips. Then get picked up at Birkenhead ferry terminal. No UK customs at Twelve Quays in Birkenhead. Take a bit longer but better than having to mess around for two weeks.

The Home Sec (Pretti Pathetic) hadn't thought it through at all. There's stupid then there's incredibly stupid!

You're only exempt if you've stayed in Ireland for 14 days after arrival. So what you are suggesting is illegal and would result in a fine. Especially someone like a high profile sportsman.

Hasn't the 14 day isolation in Ireland been abandoned?

He'd need 14 days to recover after that. :D

Well look on the bright side. If he catches it on the plane or at the airport in the UK, he's unlikely to decimate the team if he self isolates.
