Super League gets “greater financial certainty” in Sky TV revenue deal

English rugby league clubs still face UK£280k hit in revised agreement with broadcaster.

Clubs in the Super League, the England-based elite rugby league competition, have agreed a significant cut in TV revenue following the disruption to the 2020 season caused by coronavirus.

The 12 clubs are understood to be each taking around a UK£280,000 (US$344,000) hit from Sky Sports after a deal was agreed with Super League, national governing body the Rugby Football League (RFL) and the pay-TV broadcaster.

Premier League and Sky Sports settle Covid-19 rebate

Rugby league has been suspended since early March when the UK went into lockdown because of the pandemic, but while other sports are beginning to return to action, Super League is not due to start until mid-August.

Super League chairman, Robert Elstone, said: “Rugby league’s 25-year relationship with Sky Sports has been built on a genuine partnership that has never been more evident than during the Covid-19 crisis.

“We are pleased to have reached an agreement which acknowledges the disruption to Sky Sports’ Super League schedules but gives our clubs greater financial certainty moving forward in these challenging times.

“Our resilience will continue to be tested – but we are grateful to Sky for their ongoing support.”

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Neither did Toronto.
I didnt know that
Thats because Catalans and Toronto set up their own tv rights without SKY.
If you count paying a TV company to broadcast your games and doing the production yourself (Toronto) as a TV rights deal then you are correct!

Lets play every game at wembley!
would be fairer, or just use common sense and let everyone play their home games at home like all the other sports are doing, RU even have fans there....
So you'd like sky to pay to ship it's gear from one ground to another each week for the privilege of televising the sport right? Oh and there being a whole days gap between every game so they could do the breakdown and setup at everyone's home ground?

The sport is played in a real world where compromises have to be made to play at all, even over "common sense".

The ideal world is one with no pandemic, but that's not where we are.
did for football so yeah, they have the deal so its upto them

Cats now get money dont they? Otherwise sky wouldnt be showing this weekends games since bein pulled the plug last year
Sky are now to get their live feeds from L'Equipe tv, the French sports broadcaster. They will use their entire match production and will have the Sky commentary team set up in a UK studio somewhere (hopefully, social distancing !). They certainly don't (and never have) sent tv crews to Perpignan - actually may have done for the Barcelona game ?
It costs Sky only minimal overheads to do it this way, which is why they stopped live broadcasts when the previous French tv partners pulled out earlier in the season when Covid broke out.
Not sure how much, if any, Catalans receive off Sky for their home games, as there's obviously no benefit to a French audience, who see the local production.
no they didnt like I said they used bien but they lost that last season not this, there is a massive benefit to the french as they see every home game unlike us

You don't take into account any practical or financial issues in your common sense situations do you? Its an easy place to solve problems.

We should be pushing the government to include us in trails of fans in stadiums, not trying to stop teams who can already do this.
We are supposed to be one league that has adopted extraordinary special measures to continue to which all teams should be subject.

Saying one team can follow different rules than the rest is ridiculous. It completely undermines the idea of a level playing field.

It’s nothing to do with the Covid situation in France v the U.K.

If we had a SL team in Wales or Scotland they'd be subject to different Covid regulations than English teams.

France is not on the M62.

We don’t so how is that relevant? The sport had a system in place for the remainder of the season. There is absolutely no need to change it because of different regulations relating to Covid in France or anywhere else.

This weekends game should be taking place at Saints, Wire or Leeds ground behind closed doors.

If people want to bring Covid into it, the fact 5000 fans will be there given the cases in France is another reason not to do this as is the travel involving the Wigan team and coaches. It would be a lot more sensible for Les Cats to base their team in the U.K. for the duration as Toronto did normally than be flitting back and forth.
