Adrian Lam happy to be "on edge" over Wigan Warriors future

Post by josie andrews »

Adrian Lam has yet to hold talks with Wigan about his future – and he wouldn’t want it any other way.

The coach – on a one-year rolling contract – wants to stay on for 2021.

He hopes to speak to chairman Ian Lenagan and executive chairman Kris Radlinski in about a month about their plans for next season.

And while such uncertainty may be annoying for some, Lam says it is keeping him “on edge”.

“ We’ve not had a discussion and we probably won’t, and I don’t want it any different than that,” said Lam, who originally joined for 2019 but extended his stay after Shaun Edwards’ U-turn.

“It keeps me on edge – there’s pressure there.

“I have an agreement with Kris and Ian that we’ll talk when it’s the right time, and that’s probably in the next month or so.

“Hopefully we can win a Challenge Cup and then negotiate!”

Wigan, whose season finished a win short of the Grand Final last year, are 80 minutes away from a Challenge Cup Final and currently level on win percentage at the top of the Super League table.

“I’m really pleased with the position of the club,” added Lam. “Coming in there was a transitional period and we lost a few senior players, and I brought in a lot of youth to try and up-skill them, and I think the club is in good hands.

“I’d like to be a part of that, whether I am we’ll have to wait and see, but I think the club’s heading in the right direction.”

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

I, for one, hope his contract is renewed. It takes a while to judge a coach but the positive signs are starting to show.

Players like Harry Smith and Joe Shorrocks being given a chance; fitting French in a role where he can shine; Powell's improvement; signs of a better kicking game etc.

Ok, we had a blip v Hull KR, and he'll never satisfy some keyboard coaches, but we've kept our defence and toughness and added some sparkle in attack, which is what he promised.

I think we should see how things look after we have played Saints and Leeds.

Saints? The game fans on forums want to throw?
These are two reasons not to trust people.
1. We don't know them.
2. We do know them.

Why Warrior, explain your reason ?

And if it is, who would you have ?

Not enough experience and hasn’t got a game plan
Imagine how good we would be with a slater type manager with these players
I think a top Aussie coach would tempt Hastings and french to stay next year
How often do you see stains struggle with the likes of Hull kr and Wakefield
Boring same as rugby

Well he has been involved in coaching for about 30 years ! Been coach of PNG who aren't bad, been asst coach at the Roosters for ages under top coaches like Robinson and on the coaches panel for the Kangaroos, under Mal Meninga, who must see something in him ? And he's a better judge than me !
Frequently on here, like some players, they are great if we win but should be shown the door if we lose. Yet we won v Wakefield, in spite of a changed team, and the preps for the following weeks' programme ahead.

And on experience, Billy Slater has zero in that account !! Top players don't necessarily make good coaches, the records littered with failures.
