Wigan v Catalans postponed after ‘a number of positive’ Covid-19 tests

Super League has confirmed that Thursday’s game between Wigan and Catalans has been postponed after a number of Warriors staff returned positive Covid-19 tests.

The news comes after the club confirmed three positive tests last week.

The three new cases are all now self-isolating, while Wednesday’s scheduled training session was cancelled with the players and staff due to have a further round of testing on Thursday.

Since Super League’s initial announcement, Wigan have confirmed that one positive case is from a member of first team coaching staff, while the other two are from members of support staff.

After Thursday’s test results are confirmed, the RFL’s Multiple Cases Group will decide whether Wigan can return to training ahead of their next scheduled fixture against Salford next Friday (October 23).

As yet, there is no new date available in the calendar for the Warriors and Catalans to reschedule the fixture, however Super League says it will keep the situation under review.

In total, from 591 tests taken across the 11 Super League clubs and other supporting staff this week, there have been 584 negative results and seven positives, spread across four clubs.

Three clubs – Catalans Dragons, Huddersfield Giants and Salford Red Devils – had further tests on Friday because of their fixture schedule. There was one positive from that round – a Red Devils player who then had a second positive on Monday.

Salford have already confirmed that they have had two players testing positive.

The other 131 tests were negative, producing a revised total for the week starting October 5 of 709 negatives and 12 positives from 721 tests, with the positives spread across six clubs.

Wigan Warriors can confirm that there have been three positive Covid-19 results in the Club’s latest round of testing.

Testing took place on Monday 12th October and three members of staff have received positive tests.

The first case is from a member of the first team coaching staff.

The second and third are from members of support staff.

All three are now self-isolating as per Government guidelines.

As a result, and as confirmed earlier, Wigan’s scheduled Betfred Super League game against Catalans Dragons on Thursday 15th October has been postponed.

As yet, there is no new date available in the calendar for the Wigan-Catalans fixture – but the situation will be kept under review.

There will be a further round of testing at the Club on Thursday. Following those results, the RFL’s Multiple Cases Group will consider whether the Wigan first team squad can return to training.

A further update will follow in the coming days.

The Club can also confirm that one of the three players who tested positive for Covid-19 last week has since returned two negative tests this week and is now awaiting sign off to return to training.

The other two players are continuing to self-isolate as per Government guidelines.

Wigan’s next scheduled fixture is against Salford Red Devils on Friday 23rd October.

Yeah, this virus is real inconvenience, isn't it? Rugby match delayed by a few days.

Meanwhile, 40 000+ dead.

I was worried that this would happen after playing Wakefield as they were full of it at the time.

If staff have it, there’s a chance they got it or will give it to players who in turn could spread it to Catalans in that close contact game of rugby league we love.

Everyone would be pointing the finger if Wigan or the RFL were negligent and allowed it to go on.
