Weirdo Video On Wigan Page Now

A few years ago Everton went about redesigning their club badge, in their words partly because the complexity of the crest made it difficult to reproduce in accurately in different forms of media.

I'm guessing Wigan feel the same way so have decided to re-brand. Presumably they think the biggest focus should be on the 'Warriors' brand, and that a club logo should represent and clearly identify that brand. Maybe they think the current crest doesn't signify 'Warriors' and so isn't a suitable logo for this age.

I would argue, and I think most fans would agree, that the Warriors nickname is at best tolerable, but does not have anything to do with the identity of the club and its fans. The more focus that gets put on 'Warriors' the less fans will feel the club represents 'Wigan'. Maybe that's what they are going for. Maybe they think it's important to expand. I would say if rugby league starts moving away from our roots and towards generic franchises the game will lose a large part of its identity, and we won't have much else left to lose.

I accept that the club crest might not be modern enough and too complex to easily and accurately recreate, but surely you still have to keep the traditional elements of the previous one. When Everton redesigned their badge they retained the image of the Everton lock-up. If Wigan wanted to modernise the crest there is still the option of retaining key elements of it but in a simpler design, such as keeping the castle and the two lions either side of it.

If the leaked logo is the real thing then it's frankly horrendous. It looks poor. It doesn't suggest 'professional sports team', it looks like a cheap logo for a local amateur side. It's also so generic that it doesn't stand out from any other team that uses the name 'Warriors'. It also so closely resembles the 'Raider' on the Canberra badge that I'd be staggered if that wasn't used as a reference (and then basically just copied).

I'm really hoping that the logo we've seen is something to be used for merchandise. It wouldn't look out of place on a cheap t-shirt. If it's to become the new club logo though it's just awful.

I’m quite used to the new badge now!

Must admit im getting used to it now and it is growing on me a bit

what i did find interesting is i played on Fifa last night and how many football teams have exactly the same badge template including wigan atheltic
