Ethan Havard discusses his ankle injury recovery and a positive 2020.

Havard: “I want to get back to where I was before the injury.”

2021 season to begin on March 11th.

Wigan Warriors forward Ethan Havard already has his sights set on next season after injury brought his 2020 campaign to an abrupt halt.

The 20-year-old had a breakthrough campaign in 2020, making 11 appearances in total after stepping out for his debut at the DW Stadium back in 2019.

However, just as Havard was cementing a place in the matchday 17, an ankle injury called time on his season.

Speaking about the injury, which he picked up in early October, he said: “It’s been a long old grind to get back running, but I’m looking forward to getting back to being fit.

“Rehab is going good. I’m back running now which is obviously a good sign.”

And while he admits he was delighted to see his side succeed in winning the League Leaders’ Shield and reach the Grand Final, he certainly would have liked to have played a role in 2020’s climax.

“It’s been frustrating because I obviously wanted to be playing. I still enjoyed watching the lads win games, and I wanted them to win that trophy at the end of the season [Grand Final].”

There was plenty for Havard to celebrate personally, after picking up the Young Player of the Year Award at the Club’s annual awards evening a couple of weeks ago.

“I was really proud. It was a really nice moment for me and my family to be awarded that.

“It’s made what has been a bad time for me, feel a little better. Being injured hasn’t been easy so it added a nice ending to the season for me.”

With the Betfred Super League set to get underway in March, the Warriors first team are rightly now earning a break. However, the young prop has other plans.

“The lads are in their off season now, but that isn’t going to stop me because I want to get back to where I was before the injury.

“I want to have a really good pre-season and get myself back in that team for next year.”
