Adrian Lam previews Wigan’s Betfred Super League clash against Leeds Rhinos.

Lam: “We have to make sure we prepare well, turn up and put on a good performance.”

Adrian Lam will be looking for an improved performance from his Warriors side on Thursday when they take on Leeds Rhinos at Emerald Headingley Stadium (K.O. 7:45pm).

Despite Wigan having won both games in the Betfred Super League so far, the Papua New Guinean explained the need to continue improving in his weekly pre-match press conference on Monday.

“We haven’t quite nailed one yet and that’s the next challenge. We are aware of what we need to improve on and we are working hard towards it.

“The intent has been there, and as long as we have intent then everything else can grow around that as the season progresses.”

It’s not just Wigan who have had to deal with injuries in the early stages of the season, this Thursday’s opposition Leeds have also had to reshuffle their back line considerably so far.

However, Lam explained that the focus would be on his side this week in training rather than Richard Agar’s.

“We’ve had our own injury issues, so I know how difficult it can get. We’re not worried about Leeds so much, we’ve got to make sure we play well ourselves. We have to make sure we prepare well, turn up and put on a good performance.”

The head coach also provided an update on Bevan French and his likely return to full fitness.

“He will be part of the squad this week no doubt. He’s better off than he was a couple of weeks ago. We will give him the rest of the week to see if he is good to play at the back end of the week.

“ We are taking a precautionary route with him because you’re seeing so many soft tissue injuries at the moment, so we’ve got to make sure he’s ok and ready to go.”

Lam also discussed how far off Dom Manfredi and Oliver Gildart are to returning, having missed the start of the season with a broken thumb and groin strain respectively.

“Dom gets his hand out of his cast in two days time. His physical side is bang on as he’s been able to do everything else. He won’ be far away.

Gildart is different because he’s been behind on the running and the workload because of the injury.”

Despite the missing players, Lam highlighted how his rotated back line have coped well so far this season.

“Zak Hardaker has been outstanding and Willie Isa and Liam Farrell have been great too in the centres.”

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
