Wilson wows against Wolves

Post by josie andrews »

Wigan Warriors Women beat Warrington Wolves Women at Victoria Park.

The Warriors scored 11 tries on the day to come out winners on their opening game of the season.

FT | Warrington Wolves 8-52 Wigan Warriors.

Georgia Wilson scored five tries to inspire Wigan Warriors Women to 52-8 win over Warrington Wolves Women in the opening game of the 2021 season on Sunday.

There were also tries for Rachel Thompson, Becky Greenfield and doubles for Vanessa Temple and Victoria Molyneux in a dominant display by the Warriors.

The game began in steady fashion with both sides completing set after set, but Thompson broke the deadlock in the eighth minute, making a good lateral run onto a pass from Alison Burrows and having the legs to get over for Wigan’s first try of the Betfred Women’s Super League in 2021.

The Warriors were on the front foot then, scoring two tries in two minutes, both efforts coming through Wilson on the left wing, neither converted to see the Warriors 14-0 up after 15 minutes.

Temple extended the Warriors lead just minutes later, latching onto a perfect flat pass from Burrows to burst through the Warrington line and race under the uprights, converted for 20-0.

Georgia Sutherland got one back for the hosts after 25 minutes as she found a pocket of space to get past the Warriors, but Wilson popped up twice more on the left wing to register four first half efforts and see the Warriors 28-4 up at the break.

Wigan extended their lead within a minute of the restart, Wilson working the ball well up field before Molyneux finished the move with a good break to go in under the sticks. Not long after Wilson was there again to register her fifth try of the afternoon.

Warrington grabbed one back ten minutes in to the second forty, Amy Daniels creeping in at the right corner despite Wigan’s best defensive efforts. Molyneux hit back with her second of the afternoon in the 56th minute however, to further Wigan’s lead to 44-8.

The Warriors sealed the 52-8 victory with two more tries in the final ten minutes as Temple got her second of the game, running in at the right corner to punish the Wolves further, before Greenfield added to the rout with a great individual dart to go over.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
