The Warriors ran in eight tries on the day whilst keeping their opponents to nil.

FT | Wigan Warriors 38-0 Bradford Bulls.

Wigan Warriors Women ran in eight tries with seven different scorers as they beat Bradford Bulls Women 38-0 at Victoria Park, Warrington on Sunday afternoon.

The rout included first Betfred Women’s Super League tries for Amy Boardman, Emily Stirzaker and a double for Anna Mary Davies.

Bradford started well against the Warriors, having an early dart into Wigan territory and forcing an early goal line drop out, but dropping the ball on two occasions to give it back to Wigan. The Warriors made the most of the opportunity after a high kick was spilled by Bradford, the resulting play saw Rachel Thompson put Vanessa Temple through to muscle her way over for the first score of the game.

The Warriors came close in the 14th minute as Georgia Wilson looked to add to her tally for the season but her foot found touch just before the goal line. The Warriors did find a way through for their second in the 18th minute, courtesy of Victoria Molyneux, the forward latching on to the ball and crashing over, the conversion attempt was wide and Wigan led 8-0.

Wigan extended their lead further just moments later as Mary Davies crossed for her first try in Cherry and White. A testing kick wasn’t dealt with by Bradford and Temple got hands on the ball to send her winger racing 35m to go over and put Wigan 14-0 up. Boardman then joined the rout, scoring her first try for the Warriors against her former side.

Wigan stretched further ahead in the 31st minute, Stirzaker running the ball on the last to find her way over the whitewash, another scoring her first Super League try for the Club. Wilson added one last score before the half time break, going in at the left corner after quick thinking from Emma Dwyer at hooker to see the Warriors in with a 28-0 lead.

Bradford invited some early pressure to start the second period, giving a penalty away with the kick to touch taking Wigan 10m away, but they stood up in defence to deny Wigan any further score early in the half. Wigan were asking all the questions in the opening 15 minutes of the second half but the Bulls were persistent in return and the score stayed at 28-0.

The Cherry and Whites got their game back on track in the 62nd minute, after back to back handling errors from the Bulls, Wigan were camped on the goal line, and a good pass saw Rebecca Greenfield shoot through a gap in the defence to score, the conversion missed for 32-0.

Mary Davies completed the scoring for the day with a great solo break to stride under the sticks, Thompson added the extras to seal a 38-0 victory for the Warriors and make it two from two in the 2021 Betfred Women’s Super League.

Ratcliffe: We can do better

Women’s head coach Kris Ratcliffe reacts to Wigan’s win over Bradford.

Ratcliffe speaks to Wigan TV following the Warriors’ second game of the Betfred Women’s Super League season.

Ratcliffe: “You’ve got to win ugly sometimes.”

Kris Ratcliffe felt that his Wigan Warriors Women side have a lot more to offer after beating Bradford Bulls Women 38-0 on Sunday afternoon.

The Cherry and Whites ran in eight unanswered tries from seven different scorers, as they made it two wins from two in the Betfred Women’s Super League on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking to Wigan TV following the victory, Ratcliffe said: “A wins a win. It’s a bit of a cliché but we’re a bit disappointed really in how we played today, we played far too rushed and frantic and really copied a lot of what we saw for Bradford in terms of how we were playing, it wasn’t a great spectacle at all. That being said we’ve put some points on the board and we nilled them, I’d have been disappointed if we conceded but that nil is a big plus point.”

The Bulls put up a big defensive effort in the second period to keep Wigan to just two scores after a promising first half.

Ratcliffe said: “It comes from the first half, we didn’t start great and then fought to get back in; we just never got that calmness to how we were playing. I asked us to reset and start the game again in the second half but that’s easier said than done once you’ve set the platform it’s very difficult to undo and we probably went worse in that second half.

“We still managed to win the second half though so we’ve got to not dwell on it now, we’ve got a cup game next week so we need to put today’s game to bed and just know that we’re better than that. 38-0 is okay but we know we’re a lot better, there’s some good signs.”

He added: “Last time we played Bradford we got a draw and before that it was a scrappy win at their place, they’re challenging for the top four, so we’ve shown that we can take that challenge, it’s now about making that step and competing with the top three.”

Seven Wigan players were on the scoresheet on the day, with first tries for the Club for Amy Boardman, Emily Stirzaker and a double from Anna Mary Davies.

Speaking on his teams attacking capabilities, Ratcliffe said: “We know that we can score points, we’ve got some great strike players and that was the difficulty really, we didn’t set up that strike too well. We were quite flat and a bit rushed and I think with a little bit more composure we’d have put more points on the board and made things a lot easier for ourselves, but you’ve got to win ugly sometimes.”
