Match preview: Leigh

Post by josie andrews »

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Wigan’s Betfred Super League clash with Leigh Centurions (K.O. 7:45pm)

Adrian Lam’s side will take on the Leythers for the second time in 2021, having beat them on the opening day back in March.

The game itself will be played in front of spectators for the first time in over 12 months, with the lifting of restrictions allowing a limited number of Leigh fans to attend the game.

Team news

On Friday young forward James McDonnell joined York City Knights on a two-week loan, making him unavailable for selection. Learn more HERE.

After being handed a Grade F charge (Unacceptable language based on national or ethnic origin), prop forward Tony Clubb will serve the second of an eight match ban. Full statement HERE.

Injury news

Club captain Tommy Leuluai remains unavailable with a sternum injury.

Oliver Gildart misses out as he gets closer to recovering from a groin injury which has kept the centre out of action so far this season.

Liam Marshall continues his recovery from a knee injury (ACL) sustained last September against Castleford Tigers.

Providing an update on the winger earlier this week, Lam said: “He’s trained with the full squad for the first time today (Thursday), they gave him a round of applause for getting back out there with them. He’s probably two weeks away.”

Half back Jai Field remains sidelined with a hamstring tear sustained in Round 1 against Leigh Centurions.

Wigan Warriors 21-man squad to Leigh Centurions

On Saturday Adrian Lam named the Wigan Warriors 21 to face Leigh Centurions.

The Opposition

On Saturday John Duffy named his 21 to face Wigan at Leigh Sports Village on Monday night.

Scrum half Jamie Ellis is named in the squad for the first time this season after he suffered an injury in pre-season against Warrington Wolves.

Campaign so far

The Cherry and Whites remain unbeaten in the Betfred Super League, having won five from five so far this season, including victory over Leigh in Round 1.

The Centurions on the other hand have yet to register a point in 2021, having lost all five of their opening fixtures.

Coach quotes

Adrian Lam spoke to the media earlier this week ahead of the Betfred Super League clash. Discussing the opposition he said:

“They are a team who’ll be physical, aggressive and they’ll be up for it. It was tough in Round 1, going right down to the wire, so I can’t see why it won’t be any different on Monday night.”

He also explained how having spectators in the ground would influence the home side.

“There’s a lot of emotion connected to the game for Leigh, I presume, with fans back at their home ground. And for us there’s emotion of wanting to get back out there after that loss.”

Match officials

The man in the middle on Monday night at Leigh Sports Village will be Ben Thaler.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
