Match preview: Salford

Post by josie andrews »

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Wigan’s Betfred Super League clash with Salford Red Devils.

Adrian Lam’s men head to the AJ Bell Stadium on Saturday for the first time in the 2021 Betfred Super League to take on the Red Devils (1pm K.O.).

Team news

Speaking on Thursday, Lam highlighted some injury concerns ahead of Saturday’s game.

“We’ve got a couple of players at risk of missing out in Willie Isa (calf) and Morgan Smithies (ankle). We will get a check on them tomorrow (Friday) to see if they will be ready for Saturday.

“It’s a short turnaround for both clubs and you have to make sure you are playing players that are 100% fit. If those two aren’t quite 100%, then it’s probably a week to not pick them and give someone else an opportunity.”

After being handed a Grade F charge (Unacceptable language based on national or ethnic origin), prop forward Tony Clubb will serve the third of an eight match ban. Full statement HERE.

Injury news

Club captain Tommy Leuluai remains unavailable with a sternum injury.

Oliver Gildart again misses out as he looks to return from a groin issue which has kept him out of action in 2021 so far.

Liam Marshall is still unavailable as he recovers from a knee injury (ACL) which has kept the winger out of action since September 2020

Half back Jai Field continues his recovery from a torn hamstring sustained during Wigan’s season opener against Leigh Centurions in March.

Wigan Warriors 21-man squad to face Salford Red Devils

On Thursday Adrian Lam named an unchanged 21 to face Salford on Saturday.

The Opposition

On Thursday Richard Marshall named the Salford 21 to face Wigan on Saturday. Among the changes in the Salford ranks is the inclusion of ex-Wiganer Joe Burgess, who hasn’t featured for the Red Devils since pre-season due to injury.

Campaign so far

The Cherry and Whites remain unbeaten in the Betfred Super League so far, having won six from six. The run is Wigan’s best ever start to a Super League season. Salford have won just one of their opening six.

Coach quotes

Speaking to the media on Thursday in his weekly press conference, Adrian Lam explained that despite Salford’s poor start to the season, he wouldn’t be taking them lightly.

“They’re not too far away from their second win, but let’s hope it’s not this weekend.

“We’ve got to make sure we are doing the right job and playing well enough to get the win, then the season will build.”

And despite Wigan’s unbeaten start to the Super League season, the head coach expects his side to keep on improving.

“It’s a really happy group. We’re joint top with St Helens and I just feel that with some players to come back, we will be hitting our stride in a few weeks time.

“Our best rugby is still ahead of us.”

Match officials

The man in the middle on Saturday afternoon will be James Child.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
