Wigan Warriors Women beat Featherstone Rovers Ladies at the Millennium Stadium.
Warriors cross for eight tries on Sunday afternoon in a comfortable win on the road.
FT | Featherstone Rovers 36-10 Wigan Warriors.
Becky Greenfield was instrumental in a comfortable win for the Warriors Women over Featherstone Rovers on Sunday which saw Wigan make it five consecutive wins in the Betfred Women’s Super League.

There were also scores for Alison Burrows, Leah Darbyshire, Amy Boardman, Paige Costello, Rachel Thompson and Emily Baggaley on a wet afternoon in Featherstone.

Featherstone had the early threat with a break away down the left flank, but it was well watched by Becky Greenfield to force Rovers in to touch. Burrows went over for the first of the game though after just four minutes, Wigan found themselves up field and Burrows ran it from dummy half to step inside and score just right of the sticks, converted by Boardman for 6-0.

Good work for Wigan saw them over again in the 10th minute, Thompson and Greenfield linking up well to send Darbyshire over in the right-hand corner, the conversion attempt just wide from Boardman but Wigan had the 10-0 advantage.

Boardman went over in the left corner moments later, Greenfield and Thompson again keeping the ball alive to send Boardman through, the number 28 unable to convert her effort from the touchline.

Davies extended the lead in the 19th minute, the ball went backwards from Costello and the winger collected to race 30 meters and score under the sticks, converted by Boardman for 20-0.

Victoria Molyneux was close to scoring a fantastic solo effort, intercepting 10m from her own goal line and racing away but being stopped just short, the resulting pass to the wing ended with Costello in touch.

Wigan conceded back-to-back penalties in their own half to see Jess Courtman go over for Featherstone’s first of the game ten minutes before half time, Katie Hepworth converting to make it 20-6 in Wigan’s favour. Kaitlin Hilton entered the action shortly after to make her senior debut for the Warriors.

Costello got her first try for the Warriors just before the break, Greenfield collecting the kick on the last to race through 40m before being stopped, the resulting play seeing Costello muscle her way over to see Wigan in with a 24-6 half time lead.

The second half started after a delay due to thunder overhead, and straight from the restart Featherstone were reduced to 12 after a Jasmine Hazell was sent to the sin bin after a hit on Thompson late and without the ball. Davies scored straight afterwards, racing down the left wing to go over for 28-6.

As Hazell returned to the field, Featherstone’s Andrea Dobson was then sent to the sin bin after a late hit again on Thompson. Featherstone threatened the Wigan defence as the rain come down in the Millennium Stadium, but great last-ditch defence from Davies in the 57th minute forced a drop out to deny Rovers a score.

Chloe Billington went over for Featherstone moments later, finding space on the right edge to go over, the score unconverted and the score was 28-10 to Wigan.

Thompson reduced the deficit straight afterwards, running the ball on the last to slam the ball down.

Baggaley then went in on the opposite wing, Thompson creating the move to send the centre over, unconverted for 36-10.

There was a real arm wrestle through the final ten minutes but the Warriors held on for the 36-10 win to stay unbeaten in the Betfred Women’s Super League with five wins from five.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
