Lam: Injection of confidence

Post by josie andrews »

Adrian Lam reacts to Wigan’s win over Huddersfield Giants.

Lam: “We’ve been down on confidence, so this is a massive injection of confidence.”

FT | Huddersfield Giants 12-14 Wigan Warriors.

Adrian Lam praised the ‘resilient’ performance of his young Wigan side in beating Huddersfield Giants away from home on Friday evening.

The Warriors made it two-from-two against Ian Watson’s men inside a week with the victory at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Speaking to the media following the full time whistle, the Warriors head coach gave his immediate reaction to the result.

“It was a really tough game, but I’m just pleased that with five teenagers in the team, we’ve come away with the win.

I’m really pleased with the resilience that they showed. It’s one of the better wins I’ve had as a coach.”

Lam also explained how he hoped this win may prove a turning point for his side.

“We’ve been down on confidence, so with Sunday’s win and now this one, this is a massive injection of confidence. We were back to a lot of Wigan ways in terms of work ethic and effort.”

There was particular praise for young outside back Sam Halsall, who in his second first team game put in a solid performance on the right wing.

“In the changing room after the game we’ve been calling him ‘Sam ‘the bank’ Halsall, because he was so safe under the high ball.”

The Warriors head coach also provided an update on players carrying injuries following the game.

“We lost Joe Shorrocks early in the game, but he came back on which was a bonus. We will check the damage to his knee tomorrow.”

Dark clouds lifting, the kids are alright and why Huddersfield win was typical Wigan Warriors

The Cherry and Whites edged out Huddersfield Giants 14-12 at the John Smith's Stadium

Wigan Warriors saw off Huddersfield Giants for the second time in five days as they picked up a 14-12 win at the John Smith's Stadium.

Mitch Clark and Liam Farrell both scored tries but a penalty goal from Harry Smith was the difference on the night.

Here's a look at some of the talking points to emerge from the clash.

True grit

In many ways Friday night’s display was a typical Wigan performance.

Sure, the Cherry and Whites weren’t as dangerous with the ball as they would have liked to have been, but they dug deep to grind out the win by showing all the traits this Adrian Lam side has become known for.

There was grit, determination and a real desire to avoid taking a backward step at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The experienced heads of Liam Farrell and Thomas Leuluai helped manage the game when they were under the pump, but eight of the 17 involved were aged 21 or under and they all impressed in West Yorkshire.

Admittedly, Huddersfield were toothless at times, but the Warriors did enough to get the job done and it was certainly needed as they mark the end of a five-game losing streak with back-to-back results.

The kids are alright

As mentioned, almost half of the team named by Lam was 21 or under and there was a reason the head coach could be singing their praises at full-time.

Umyla Hanley was a safe pair of hands in the full-back position, Sam Halsall was even safer on the right wing, in fact, he was so assured that Lam nicknamed him ‘The Bank’ in his post-match press conference.

Brad O’Neill and Amir Bourouh were impressive in the hooker role, while Kai Pearce-Paul continued to look more than at home in the Warriors' back-row.

Harry Smith turned in one of his most mature performances in the halves for Wigan, kicking well and having a huge say in both the club’s tries.

Once again, Wigan’s production line is coming in for praise. What is it about that Warriors academy?!

Centurion

Farrell was probably Wigan’s best performer on the night and he managed to cap another top performance with his 100th Super League try.

The 31-year-old is already a legend at the DW Stadium but he just keeps on raising his game and his latest milestone is an indication of how consistent he has been over the years.

He’s been the best back-rower in the country for some time now and he’ll certainly be a valuable asset for England at the World Cup

Things are looking up

The Warriors were down and out after their loss to St Helens at the start of the month, but two tight and edgy wins over Huddersfield Giants have seen the dark clouds over the DW Stadium disperse.

All of a sudden the Warriors are looking up the table rather than down it and they find themselves breathing down the neck of fourth placed Hull FC.

A win over Wakefield Trinity next week could take them above the Black and Whites, depending on their result against Huddersfield, and that would allow the Warriors to bounce into their huge game against Warrington Wolves with bags of confidence.

Throw in the imminent returns of Morgan Smithies, Zak Hardaker, John Bateman, Jai Field and Dom Manfredi and the rest of the season looks a lot brighter for Wigan.
