The Warriors score nine tries including a hat-trick for Umyla Hanley.

FT | Wigan Warriors 50-6 Leigh Centurions.

Wigan Warriors comprehensively beat local rivals Leigh Centurions 50-6 at the DW Stadium in Round 17 of the Betfred Super League on Sunday afternoon.

Fans in the ground were treated to nine tries on the day, including a hat-trick from youngster Umyla Hanley. There was also a debut try in the competition for back Sam Halsall who was deployed on the right wing.

The win completed a clean sweep for the Cherry and Whites against the Leythers in 2021, having beat them on two previous occasions.

Report

Wigan opened the scoring early on when captain Tommy Leuluai crossed in the corner. A right edge move found its way to the half, who managed to drop a shoulder, find a gap and dash in from 20 metres.

The away side struck back just a few minutes later through Liam Hood. The hooker dove over from dummy half

However, the Warriors got their noses back just three minutes later when Umyla Hanley touched down in the corner. A great cut-out ball from stand-in full back Jackson Hastings provided the winger with space to run into and grab a score.

An altercation in the 15th minute between Leigh’s Jack Ashworth and Wigan’s Brad Singleton resulted in the pair both being shown red by referee Scott Mikalauskas.

Wigan extended their lead in the 27th when Liam Farrell crossed for a score. Brilliant quick hands from John Bateman and Jackson Hastings created space for the experienced second row to go in.

Hanley went in for his second of the game three minutes before half time, again diving over in the corner. Farrell became the supplier this time around, feeding the winger into space at the end of a good attack for the Warriors.

On the hooter for half time Farrell grabbed his second try. A great break from Harry Smith opened up the chance for the second row, who Smith was able to find expertly.

The Warriors got the scoreboard moving again in the second half when Sam Halsall crossed for his first ever Super League try. A creative pass from Joe Shorrocks found the youngster in plenty of space out wide, who then stepped inside his marker to cross.

Shorrocks got one of his own in the 62nd thanks to a great break by interchange Amir Bououh and a short ball assist from Smith.

Hastings got in on the act in the 66th, latching onto a brilliantly executed grubber from Halsall to collect and touch down.

Hanley rounded off the win by completing his hat-trick two minutes before full time. A line break from Smith followed by a great grubber put the winger in the corner to score.

Lam: Adapted well

Adrian Lam reacts to Wigan’s victory over Leigh Centurions on Sunday afternoon.

Lam: “I was really proud of the performance based on the team out there today.”

FT Wigan Warriors 50-6 Leigh Centurions.

Adrian Lam praised the efforts of his young side in their 50-6 victory over Leigh Centurions on Sunday afternoon.

The Cherry and Whites put in a classy performance against their local rivals, putting on nine tries including a first senior hat-trick for Umyla Hanley.

Speaking to the media following the win, the Wigan head coach began by giving his immediate reaction to the win.

“I was really pleased for the group. It’s been a hectic time for us, with around seven games in the last 30 days or so.

“I was really proud of the performance based on the team out there today.”

Lam gave particular praise to the performances a number of young players who stepped up to the plate due to late withdrawals.

“We had a few late changes which could have disrupted our performance, but the two young players playing on the wing in Sam Halsall and Umyla Hanley did really well, and Amir Bourouh off the bench did well too.

He also discussed the Man of the Match winning performance of half back Harry Smith, who was at the heart of the Wigan attack on Sunday.

“He’s had a good run of it over the last six to eight weeks. He’s still got lots to improve upon but he certainly showed some good signs out there today.”

Centre Oliver Gildart was a late withdrawal, leading to the inclusion of Sam Halsall, who grabbed his first Super League try for the Warriors.

On Gildart: “He pulled up in the captain’s run yesterday with a bit of a strain, but when he arrived today he was still going to play.

“He went out and had a run for the warm up and said it was pulling, so we didn’t want to take the risk on him.”

After scoring the opening try, Tommy Leuluai left the field with a hamstring injury in the first half. On his condition: “He said he felt a ‘pop’ which is never good when that’s the feedback.

“We will address his situation and the level of damage tomorrow.”
