Wigan v St Helens: Willie Isa, John Bateman & James Bentley banned after derby

Wigan's Willie Isa has been suspended for four games after two incidents in Friday's derby loss to St Helens, with team-mate John Bateman and Saints' James Bentley receiving one-game bans.

Isa was banned for three games on a Grade C striking penalty notice and one game for a strike with a forearm, for Grade A other contrary behaviour.

Bateman's suspension was for dissent to referee Chris Kendall.

Bentley received his ban for kicking out at an opponent at the ruck.

Wigan and St Helens could both appeal, as Warriors coach Adrian Lam confirmed is being considered.

"It's not ideal that we've got two players in this position this week," he said. "These little indiscretions keep popping up and it's not good enough.

"I'm trying to promote the fact that we need to be disciplined. We need to keep our heads and coolness.

"There was a lot of emotion last weekend and that has to be taken into consideration when making these decisions.

"We'll have a look at that in depth and see if there's a case for us to challenge."

Think 4 games was about right for Isa.

Bateman, well you can’t mouth off yo the ref and get away with it,not sure what they could appeal really.

Bentley there’s a case of a player being a prat that a straight red would have sufficed for my money not the sin binning,if,god forbid Kendal had acted on that and defuse the situation then maybe, just maybe the rest of the game would have been a better spectacle than that garbage served up Friday.

What a joke a sin binning is punishment enough, players always dispute the decisions, Luke gale has made a carrier of it
These are two reasons not to trust people.

Yeah, but there's 'disputing' and disputing. If, for example, he called the ref an effing moron, then that's worthy of a card. Refs don't get shirty if players keep it civil.

A card and a ban though

Whatever happened to marching the player back 10 yards for dissent and that is the end of it?

Wigan to consider appealing Bateman and Isa bans

Wigan coach Adrian Lam says the Warriors will consider appealing the four-match ban handed to Willie Isa and the one-match ban given to John Bateman following an intense local derby between Wigan and St Helens on Friday night.

Isa has been suspended for two different incidents, with Bateman also incurring a one-match ban for what has been described as “foul and abusive language” towards a referee.

There was a lot of emotion last weekend and that has to be taken into consideration when making these decisions,” Lam said when asked about a potential appeal.

“We’ll have a look at that in depth and see if there’s a case for us to challenge.”

Wigan were on the receiving end of a 26-2 hammering which left them hanging on to their top-four spot in Super League by a thread.

Saints, meanwhile, kept the pressure on Catalans Dragons at the top of the table.

Both thoroughly deserved. Dock their wages and get on with preparing for Leeds.
