I think a lot of people are focusing on Briers because they know the club is desperately in need of new ideas and given Peet and Wane are both associated with the current issues people see, he's the glimmer of hope.

There would be nothing to cheer about without Briers appointment and I think plenty of people are excusing the appointment of Peet and the return of Wane based on Briers joining the coaching staff. They are ignoring whether he will be any good in the job. Which to be fair we don't know and will have to wait and see but really I think Briers has deflected a lot of flak for Peet being appointed head coach.
Briers and Lockers are intended to deflect the flak.
Why would they need to excuse the appointment of Peet?

6 out of 7 grand final wins with the academy, fixed out defence on his return as assistant, has relevant qualifications.

People would be foaming at the mouth is it was announced that a Aussie assistant who was responsible for a clubs brilliant defence and when coaching the reserves won 6 out of 7 finals was coming on board.

Give the guy a chance.

I think people would be warmer to the Peet appointment if they felt it had been done with any amount of options appraisal. As has been highlighted there is a incredibly prevalent jobs for the boys culture at Wigan so it means that Peet's appointment would always spark a level of cynicism.

I remember when Wane was appointed and everyone was very happy with that because at that stage the club was bringing in external people and there was a feeling we had the best staff available I'm looking at the likes of bitcon largely credited with turning us around as much as Madge.

However the club has turned many fans into cynics with the constant stream of internal promotions and lets face it flat out lying to fans. The club is running things its own way and just expecting the fans to blindly follow which many will but many wont. You cant run a club on the whim of fans but you also cant run a club without one so you need to think carefully about how you deliver news etc, telling fans clark is the most destructive forward in the league is just going to make people doubt any other compliment you put on someone

I dont know if Peet will be good or not but i know he was here last year and we were rubbish, lockers was here last year and we were rubbish. So unless someone is suggesting that Lam ignored everything those 2 had to say then it stands to reason people would question the appointment.

I dont get this concept of you have to see everything as positive until its proven negative - people have the right to be concerned about the quality assurance wigan put into any recruitment. We have blatant issues that anyone who watches 1 game of ours would be able to list and yet the club have as yet done nothing to sort those issues so why would i have faith in yet another internal appointment made by the same people who think tommy should be playing next year, that Powell doesn't need replacing and we dont need a half back to replace hastings

I remember when Bitcon left alot of the posters complained about his replacement as he had worked up and wasn't an outsider, they even credited the athleticism of the next year as the left over of bitcons work, 2 hear later fitness still isn't an issue at wigan, we ended up relying on it to muchnas we had no attack.

We have to view this team with optimism. I'm very pleased with this set up, full of potential.
Concern raised over Peet not having first team experience, but then neither had Mike Maguire, and he did well for us.
There's a lot of support and ideas, and this is a team which could get their ideas into reality.
Looking forward to next season already.
Separately I shall be a Catalan fan on Saturday!

Are we not? I think we have over relied on our fitness to try and see games out, i don't think fitness has been an issue at all outside of a couple of players coming back unfit from the off season.

Sorry but there is a massive difference between the Maguire situation and this.

Yes both were "gambles" but that's where it ends.

Maguire came from a different comp, brought different ideas and was from outside the club.

DaveO wrote: Wed Oct 06, 2021 12:18 am Lam was not brought in for new ideas so it’s disingenuous to suggest doing that doesn’t work. Lam was a stop gap for Edwards and when that didn’t work instead of going back to the drawing board and looking for a top coach IL took the cheap and easy option with Lam.

As to who else could Wigan have brought in who wouldn’t be a risk how about a coach with a proven track record? They don’t always work out but that doesn’t mean you don’t look for someone with a proven record on the expectation that they will do better than someone without a proved record.
How do Stains manage to go out and get good coaches? Their CEO goes to Aus to search out and interview candidates, and seem to be able to bring in the best available. We have KR who trots out more and more excuses, and doesn't appear to bring anything positive to the club. The problem lies with him, not Peet, or Lam.
Can't go to Aus at the moment though can you.

What were the options available for appraisal towhich you refer? How do you know to what extent the club enquired as to the availability of a more suitable candidate than Matty Peet?
A word of encouragement during a failure is worth more than an hour of praise after success.

I totally agree.
He doesn’t seem to have made a bad job of it at Warrington. Second highest points scorers in Super League in 2021. How’s that for a proven track record. In addition, he has played the game far more recently than Lam. Offhand, it’s hard to think of a more suitable candidate for the job.
Proven track record of failure. Its always their year.
